Town Landings of Westport

This photo essay attempts to visually highlight and identify many of the List of Public and Town Landings as distributed by the Town of Westport. Public Landings were originally laid out by the Proprietors of Dartmouth in the early 1700’s. The landings are under the control of the landing commissions and are subject to the by-laws of the Town of Westport. The general public is entitled to use these landings on the same basis as Westport inhabitants.

Town Landings were acquired in various ways by the Town of Westport. Control and regulations are the same as public landings but inhabitants of Westport may be given preference over the general public.

Many Town Ways (9 have been identified) have been laid out and accepted by the Town of Westport to the ocean, river, beach or shore. These layouts generally do not extend below high water mark and do not give the Town or public the right to use the adjoining portion of beach between high and low water for a landing or a way. A list of town ways can be obtained from the Selectmen’s’ office.

Public and town landings, and town ways provide access to our ocean and water way resources that may not be otherwise accessible to all town inhabitants. All information provided here was taken from: List of Public and Town Landings - Access to Rivers and Ocean in Westport, Massachusetts.
