at the Point
recently sponsored two programs in the Little Compton and Westport schools. On
Friday, January 25, Opera Boston's Opera Shop was at Westport Elementary
at 8:45 a.m. and presented a performance for grades 3 and 4. They then
went to Wilbur-McMahon at 10:30 a.m.
for grades 3 and up. The program was
entitled "The
Telephone--A Comic Opera in One Act." The 3rd and 4th graders laughed and woo’ed
continuously as poor Daniel, leaving for a business trip, tried to propose to
cell phone addict Sol, who was constantly interrupted by friends calling the
annoying instrument. His solution – leave the apartment and propose to her
on, you guessed it, his cell phone! The performers: Sol Kim-Bentley, Daniel Kamalic, and Glorivy Arroyo,
accompanied by pianist Rachel Adler-Golden, then conducted a mini-workshop
for the Elementary students using volunteers 3rd graders Noah Salva and Alyssa Rochon, and 4th
graders Teddy Greenwood and Emma Young.
They then spoke to the student body, answering questions and sharing
vocation experience. “It was great,” elementary school Principle Alex Ciminello said. “This is a piece of culture they might
not have got in.” On Thursday, January 31, Infinities Chamber Ensemble will
be at Westport Elementary for grades 1 and 2, two performances at 9 a.m. and
10 a.m., then at Macomber School that afternoon at 1 p.m. for the
Kindergarten students. The program is "Meet the Woodwinds with Peter and the
Wolf." Both of these
groups are presented under the auspices of Young Audiences of Massachusetts,
funded by Concerts at the Point.
Young Audiences is a new contact for them, and they specialize in arts
education in the schools. Please come to any or all of these
presentations as your schedule permits. For further information or

resolve of his volunteers, selecting only those who trusted in him by falling
forward, eyes closed, into his arms without hesitation. (2) James Wood, 2009 Class President, finds his arms
uncontrollably stiff under the spellbinding power of comic hypnotist Frank
Santos Jr. (3) Under hypnotic suggestion, these competitive “body builders” exhibited
their posing skills. From the left: Alexandra Paull,
Tracy Martin, James Wood, Sean Croft, and Jackie Reis. (4) Victoria Ferreira (left), 2010 Class President, and Tina
Frazier belt out “I Will Survive”,
under the encouragement of Frank Santos Jr.’s
stunning mind power. Their performance brought down the house. In the auditorium of Westport
High School, comic hypnotist Frank
Santos Jr. took command of 12 students and adults, selected out of 45
volunteers, and reached deep into their subconscious minds, planting hypnotic
suggestions that resulted in stiffened arms and tongues, and lots of laughs
from the audience. “I was getting really worried,” Gail Silvia, Westport High
Athletic Director said. “With only one week to go we had so few ticket sold,
we were preparing to cancel the show.” She shouldn’t have worried. 222
tickets were sold, netting over $1000 for the class of 2010. “We’re
thrilled,’ Gail said. Mr. Santos, ever the consummate and considerate showman,
used his power of hypotonic suggestion to transform seemingly normal Westport
High School students into ballerinas, body builders, divas, and victims of
rubber noses, itchy feet, and overpowering bodily urges! Two of the students
even tried to answer a shoe which they thought was a ringing phone. Wouldn’t
you know, it was a wrong number! Tammie Shurtleff of Westport,
when asked about the show said, “I don’t know if the kids were hypnotized or
not, maybe 50/50 they were,” she said. “But it gave them a chance to discover
their latent talents on stage under guise of being hypnotized. That was great!” The comedy cabaret was a tremendously funny evening of
antics, acrobatics, pirouettes, karaoke, and air guitars. And the kids
brought down the house with a sterling rendition of ‘I Will Survive’ by Gloria Gaynor. 2010
class President Victoria Ferreira was one of the volunteers as was James
Wood, 2009 class President. The real magic of Frank Santos Jr. was in skillfully
orchestrating an acting opportunity for students who might otherwise be too
shy to perform in front of a large audience. Of course, they will have to
face their peers Tuesday morning at school! The students, snapped out of their hypotonic trance, may
not recall their antics, but this is one
hilarious, energetic and unique show these impromptu entertainers will never
forget! COA helps seniors plan ahead. - January 3, 2008 Return to Index

ones. Upper middle: From the left – Ann Marie Booth, Andrea Lemos, and Phyllis Sandman, friends and volunteers for

Aime Delaney and Kimberly Smith, both Directors of
Advance Planning for Waring-Sullivan. Members, volunteers, guests and friends of the
Council of Aging invited
representatives from Waring-Sullivan to host a seminar on the
importance of planning ahead for funeral arrangements. Too often, monetary
and arrangement decisions are based on guilt or emotions at a time when
people are least able to handle them. Costs can skyrocket, and options may
not be fully understood while under the emotional distress of loosing a loved
one. Aime Delaney and Kimberly
Smith, both Directors of Advance Planning for Waring-Sullivan,
gave an enlightening PowerPoint presentation, educating COA attendees how to
prompt seniors and their family members to start making these important
decisions as a family. They pointed out how prepaid funerals protected by
reputable insurance and financial institutions could hold cost increases to a
minimum, while protecting the prepaid investment. “Proper planning,” Kim
said, “can help set expectations before, during and after funeral services.” Read about the Eight Reasons to

and came to the Westport River
Watershed Alliance office to hear John
Rockwell (upper left) give a presentation on wetland management. John Rockwell is the wetlands
specialist for the Buzzards Bay National Estuaries Project and is a former
conservation agent and Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions
board member. He discussed the structure and function of wetlands and
why they must be protected. John also talked about wetland policy and
any issues that are currently being fought for, or any laws that are being
fought against. These free, informal “fire-side” chats” are a wonderful
way to disseminate information on environmental issues that effect out town’s
quality of life. And having lunch
while learning about wetlands is a great use of your lunch hour! Dog Days of January! – Saturday, January 12, 2008 Return to Index Click on images to enlarge Photo far

Barry demonstrates how to achieve a high level of obedience from your dog
with signals, treats and simple verbal commands. “Obeying your command could
save the dog’s life while walking in highly trafficked areas,” Jim Said. “A
dog must respond to their owner without hesitation.” Photo far right: R.I. Dog Guy, Jim Barry, getting Tobey to
curtsey for Maureen of Abby’s Dog Depot. “It’s helpful to have a pouch of dog
treats by your side,” Jim said. Dog owners both young and
not-getting-any-younger at heart attended a fascinating, free lecture
presented by Jim Barry of R.I. Dog Guy at Abby’s Dog Depot, State Road in
Westport on Saturday afternoon. Jim introduced his “Four Steps To Dog Obedience” training program with the help of a
PowerPoint presentation and Tobey, his black Labrador. Jim and his trusted
assistant conducted a clinic on how to achieve a well behaved dog. Using
treats and “lures”, and verbal and signed commands, Tobey showed the audience
just what a good boy he was. “Dogs respond well to rewarded behavior,” Jim
said. “But it’s very important to know that bad behavior may be inadvertently
rewarded with attention from the owner, even if that attention is negative.
It’s important to recognize this difference.” The interactive, two-hour
presentation answered many questions troubling dog owners in the audience on
how to make “man’s best friend” also his best behaved. For more information call Abby’s Dog Depot at
