Sweets and Sweethearts at the United Congregational! Return to Index - Saturday, February 9, 2008 Click on images to enlarge Upper
left: Marjorie
and Joseph Sears of South Dartmouth joined a Westport friend for lunch. “It
was a great lunch,” Joseph said. “And for a good cause,” Marjorie added. Middle: The Valentine confection and
cookie table drew everybody, right Marie? Right: From the left, the ladies of the kitchen: Ginny, Connie,
Cathy, Ann, Janice, and Judy. Great job ladies! One of the first to kick off a Valentines Day lunch this year was the
Westport United Congregational Church
on American Legion Highway. The beef stew was terrific as usual, and the
array of Valentine confections was enough to tempt even the most
diet-conscious among us! Mexican Fiesta at Wilbur-McMahon! - February 1, 2008 Return to Index View the

children learn about a different country’s culture, language and traditions?
If you’re a third grade student at the Wilbur
McMahon School you’ll get to experience a Mexican Fiesta! Leading the third
graders through 2 ½ hours of carefully planned activities were the seventh
grade Spanish students from the same school. Included activities were Spanish
versions of Simon Says, Bingo (great idea!), Pin the Tail on the Donkey (Ponga la Cola en el Burro!), musical chairs, I Spy, and
Mexican dancing. Additionally, the
third graders cracked open two piñatas, played the Twister game in Spanish,
hopped around a cake walk to lively Mexican music while an announcer shouted
out numbers in Spanish, tried their hand at Mexican crafts, and munched on
chips and salsa. This event was a
culminating activity of the Community Ties unit the third graders have been
studying in class, and links closely to the story “Family Pictures” they’ve
been reading and discussing. What an innovative, educational experience for
these lucky third graders! Hats off to Little Compton’s Wilbur McMahon

Best friends Liz Charnley and Ashley Rice, aged 10
and 9 respectively, of Fairhaven get up close and personal with alpaca Teddy. Upper right: Dante and fawn-colored
Teddy. Lower left: Lovely Shelley Riley of Golden Touch Farms in
Westport hugging handsome Dante as she introduces him to the crowd. Partners Village Store was packed with people
and alpacas Saturday as they kicked off their “Nice to Meet You” series with a presentation complete
with gentle-enough-to-pet alpacas from Golden Touch Farm in Westport,
MA. Specialists in fostering at-risk animals, Shelley and Chris Riley
began breeding alpaca 8 years ago. The Rileys were on hand to show
how the fiber is made into socks, gloves, shawls, sweaters and afghans,
how breeders across the country benefit and are part of the fiber pool
they've established, and introduce to the public two of their docile,
endearing 35 member flock, males Dante and Teddy. “It’s going great,” enthused Shelley Riley of Golden Touch
Farms. “We’re happy to be out doing this, especially in our own local
community.” Over the past 20 years, Chris and Shelley Riley have been
involved in breeding high quality, well socialized animals. In 1996,
they purchased an early 19th century farm in Westport where along
with Golden Retrievers, they hand raised very social, exotic deer.
Their passion for raising and caring for
animals drew them to Alpacas. “They’re very soft,” said Liz Charnley,
aged 10, from Fairhaven who came over with her mother and best friend Ashley
just to see the alpacas. Liz was thrilled when Teddy nibbled straw from her
hand. The alpacas were appealing to visitors of all ages. Emma Olson, aged 6,
of Little Compton looked through the fence with disbelief as Dante looked
back at her, probably feeling the same way. “We’re selling some product,” Chris Riley said. ”The socks
were gone in an hour. I’ve already been back to the car for more stock!” “I can’t believe the number of people who came out to see
these alpacas,” Nancy Crosby of Partner’s said, shaking her head. The
appealing alpaca really packed them in at Partners with hundreds of visitors
from the area dropping by. North American alpacas are extremely social, completely
non-aggressive and produce the finest wool known to man. The fiber is
often compared to cashmere and is used exclusively in the luxury apparel
industry. |
