Jeff Reed wins 4th Annual 5k Devin Laubi Run/Walk; Eric Worsley takes second! - April 27
Jeff Reed of Fall River took first with a time of 16:55. Eric Worsley, also
of Fall River and last year’s second place finisher, was second again with
17:45. Reid Burns of Westport (last year’s winner) came in third at 18:48.
Reports had Jeff Reed flying through the course with almost a minute over
second place finisher Eric Worsley. This young man can run!
The gray Sunday morning didn’t dampen the runners’
spirits as the 10 a.m. race time saw 85 runners queue up at Bristol Community
College on
777 Elsbree Street in Fall River to take part in the 4th annual
running of the Devin Laubi Run/Walk. The 85 runners were up from 35 last
year. “This was a tremendous participation improvement in this event for us,”
said Robin
Burns-Laubi, event organizer.
The 4th Annual 5k Run/Walk, sponsored by the Devin
Laubi Foundation, benefits families of children with cancer, and children’s
organizations. “We’ve
helped 5 children in need just this year,
and looks like it will be a busy year,” said Robin. “I have the name of another
child in need. So thank you all for
joining us for our 5K, and help us help more kids in need!”
“Sponsors
took up the gauntlet and contributed some outstanding raffle items and prizes,”
said Robin. “Winners received sneakers and t-shirts from Reebok; Dominos of
Fall River provided free pizza; Down to Earth Natural
Foods of New Bedford donated four backpacks stuffed full of natural and
nutritious snacks; and Old Westport Beer and Wine of Westport
contributed two $25 gift certificates. I
hope I didn’t miss mentioning other supporters,” Robin said.
The organizers provided
water, bananas and power bars; and the first 100 registrants received
silk-screened t-shirts. “We grossed about $2000,” said Robin. “We provided cash
prizes for the top 3 best times for men, women and under 18 categories. The proceeds
from the event will directly aid families of children stricken with cancer.”
“Our
community’s continued support for children with cancer warms our hearts,” said
Robin. “These kids need their parents more than ever during these times. Your
support helps ensure a frightened child can have what they need, or at least
what we can help with. As most of you
know, Devin needed and wanted both
of his parents while he endured the horrors of cancer. Unfortunately our financial situation did not
warrant that without loosing our home, Devin’s home, or being able to put food
on the table and maintain our health insurance (very much needed at that
time). We feel we are granting the
unspoken wish come true; it’s not Disney, but it’s the heart’s need, for parent
and child,” Robin said.
1st
place finishers received $75, and sneakers and t-shirts from Reebok; 2nd
place finishers got $50 and a jacket; and 3rd got $25.
There was a
great raffle of donated items, including running jackets, and gift certificates
from local restaurants.
