“It was wall-to-wall people at 9 a.m. when we opened the front door,” said Sandra Lovely, event organizer. “100 people were waiting to get in. It’s the way it’s has always been at this event’” She said.

“They come for the plants,” said Barbara Holmes (left in picture), also an event organizer. “Then it’s the gently used clothes, or as we prefer to call them, the classy clothes!”

“We see all our friends here from year to year,” Barbara said. “All of our customers look forward to this event. It’s a big fund raiser for the church.”

Apparently so, as this year’s Spring Things was no garden-variety yard sale! Over 200 supporters came to Amicable Congregational Church and cleaned them out of all their plants, and had a great lunch in the process. “We have chicken, egg, or tuna sandwiches; green and pasta and potatoes salads; and desserts and beverages,” Sandra said.

“Our white elephant sale draws a big crowd of resellers, as well as individuals,” said Barbara. I guess so! This observer couldn’t tell the difference from racked merchandise at Amicable to those found in J. C. Penney.

“Many of our customers had the May breakfast over at the United Congregational Church in Westport before coming here,” Barbara said. “It’s a great way to start the weekend and to spend your day.”

Spring Things was held at the Amicable Congregational Church, just north of Tiverton Four Corners, and was open Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. They had a great selection of Perennial Plants, Garden Tools, Bake Table, Clothing, Collectibles, White Elephant and, of course, lunch!

“Whatever is left over goes to Savers in Fall River for the benefit of the Big Sisters,” Barbara said.

Les Cory of Tiverton (above far right) was browsing the classy clothes while enjoying coffee. Les is a retired from UMass in Dartmouth, and “really enjoys coming to the Spring Flings.”

“Our really big event is the Summer Fair,” Barbara said. “The chairperson is Bobi Zeiser (pictured above with Barbara). We put up a huge circus tent and just go bananas!”
