The concept
of the Yogathon first took root when a
student of Yoga At The
Grange, Dawn Peckham, noticed that the
building’s eaves were in need of repair. She suggested the possibility of a Yogathon to help raise money to help the
Grange and thus the idea for a fundraiser was born.
“The name Yogathon is probably a little misleading,” Caryl Sickul, one of the participating teachers
said. “The suggestion of an all-day marathon session of Yoga was a little
confusing. Actually, the many offered sessions throughout the day created a
relaxed environment where students of one instructor could take a class with
another teacher to experience an additional aspect or tenet of Yoga,” she explained.
“Some philosophies
of Yoga promote community service, and in this light we were very successful. In
addition, here at the Yogathon
we experienced goodness, a beauty and openness to the students. This venue
seemed to promote quickness to smile and a kindness of spirit that produced calming
vibrations, quite the opposite of the stresses in a marathon,” Caryl said.
If you’re
looking for a workout program that's easy to learn, requires little or no
equipment, and soothes the soul while toning the body, then the Yogathon and yoga are for you! This all-day
event was a fun, fit experience with a smorgasbord of yoga classes to sample
different styles and different teachers.
All were
welcome. The Macomber Community Center across the street served as a
registration area, refreshment spot, and a staging point for teachers and
students. The Yogathon was a great
opportunity to experience the many disciplines of yoga, and the wonderful
instructors who teach them. Look for a continuation of seasonal Yogathon’s!
