Click your heels together, Dorothy. There’s no place like Partners. Westport’s venerable village store delivers another sparkling weekend in its Nice to Meet You! series that will keep you coming back for more. If something is happening in Westport, it’s usually happening at Partners.

The Power of a Local Product...

Tanya Bernard of Screencraft Tileworks in Providence, RI, was on hand Saturday to talk about the screen printing process used to create beautiful coasters, trivets and much more. “We’re a wholesale company Ms. Bernard said. “It’s great to get out and meet the people who buy our products!”

Screencraft Tileworks prints local images onto Botticino marble including paintings by artist Arthur Moniz, and local maps. Tumbled Botticino marble is made in New England and is the name for the light beige color marble that appears in great quantities in parts of Italy and Turkey. It has a wonderfully varied texture and beautiful coloring. No two stones are alike.

“The printing process is highly specialized and was developed by our company,” Ms. Bernard said. “It involves ink jet technology. You can think of it as similar to silk screening, but much more complex.”

Heal Yourself Simply...

rsz_40.jpgRachel Elmaleh, founder of Little Bird Herbs (LBH) in Providence, RI, helped potential customers soothe themselves with samples of her organic teas, balms and salves. Ms. Elmaleh’s creations are handmade with ingredients free of petroleum, sulfates, artificial colors and flavors. The product you receive is fresh, effective, and pleasurable to the senses. Sip LBH’s Siesta Fiesta tea at the end of a challenging day, or heal your little one’s nicked knee with her Must-Have Salve made with local, wild harvested herbs. Little Bird Herbs is dedicated to offering Nature’s alternatives to today’s mainstream health and beauty care products.

“It’s exciting being here at Partners. I’m so grateful they offered me this opportunity to demonstrate my products,” Ms. Elmaleh said. “It’s wonderful helping local businesses reach out to their communities.”

Martha Berg of Fairhaven stopped by to visit with Rachel. “This is the first time I’ve been in Partners since they relocated,” she said. “Rachel’s products are very nice, and she has such a beautiful exhibit. I’m picking up some breath mints for my grandchildren that are great for colds. And I love the hand lotions.”

t4.jpgLuke Carter of Westport (below left) has a better idea when soliciting donations to support the Antioch School in Fall River. This board member “shuffles up and deals!”

“Our tournaments are growing,” Carter said. His wife Gina was there registering players and running the 50/50 raffle.

Whites of Westport hosted another no-limit Texas hold‘em fundraiser Friday night to benefit the Antioch School located in the Highlands Historic District of Fall River. The school is a private elementary school designed to provide an educational alternative for children from preschool through Grade 8.

44 players anted up $60 each to join in on the fun. No-limit Texas hold’em has captivated the imagination of millions of novice poker players across the globe, popularized by the movie Rounders starring Matt Damon, and the success of amateur poker players winning the World Series of Poker, starting with Chris Moneymaker in 2003. The 2006 World Series of Poker champion (an amateur) received over 12 million dollars in winnings, more than golf’s 2008 Masters champion and all other individual skill tournament champions combined!

Flops, turn, river, big blind; it’s all techno-speak to non-poker players. Pot odds, value bets, on the button, on the bubble; one needed a Roget’s International Thesaurus of Poker Words and Phrases! And don’t even ask about chip management. All texas hold’em players are big fans of World Series of Poker on ESPN, and most have watched every event since 2003. When they sit at a table, it’s not Joe or Harry sitting next to them but bracelet winners Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson, or Daniel Negreanu!

The tournament started at 7 p.m., and by 11:30 they had their final table of seven players. The “big stacks” would now battle it out for the money! By midnight Peter of Taunton and Lucille of Somerset were heads up (the last two players).

Patient Peter and steely-eyed Lucille traded “all-ins” until Peter “flopped” a set of eights, leaving Lucille “drawing dead” after the turn. In layman’s turns, Peter’s three eights beat Lucille’s ace high in a hand and won the tournament!

Gift cards were presented to the winners:

1st – Peter of Taunton  $500 gift card

2nd – Lucille of Somerset  $300 gift card

3rd – Bill of Lee  $200 gift card

4th – Rick of Fall River  $100 gift card

5th – Paul of Swansea $75 gift card

Best winning hand (four jacks!) of the evening went to Jon Alden of Westport - $50 gift card.
