“I just came from the Governor less than an hour ago to receive this signed Proclamation,” State Representative Michael J. Rodrigues said. Governor Deval Patrick was visiting in Fall River, but took the time to sign and give to Representative Rodrigues A Proclamation declaring August 17th to the 23rd to be Massachusetts Farmers Market Week.

Governor Deval Patrick has proclaimed August 17th to the 23rd Massachusetts Farmers' Market Week, calling the markets "essential to the vitality of Massachusetts farms."

Representative Rodrigues couldn’t have picked a better time to visit the Market. “Our state representative is going to draw our three winning raffle tickets,” said Beth Easterly, Westport Farmers’ Market coordinator. “How exciting to also receive the signed Proclamation at the same time!” Rep. Rodrigues presented the proclamation to Beth Easterly and Ed Horky, Grange master.

Ms. Easterly had to drag Rep. Rodrigues away from the beautiful, hand-crafted Hybrid Night Heron Kayak being raffled off by the Westport Fishermen’s Association (see announcement below).

Howie Gifford and Tom Perkins were at the Farmers’ Market Saturday morning selling kayak raffle tickets. “We spent 250 hours mainly finishing, sanding and varnishing the Night Heron,” he said. “All the guys kicked in and contributed whatever talents they had.” They must have been considerable because the Night Heron’s sleek hull gleamed and sparkled in the sunshine.

“We have done very well selling tickets at the Farmers’ Market,” he said, “as well selling them briskly at Partners and the Back Eddy.”

Winners of the three, assorted raffle tables drawn by Rep. Roderigues were: Deb Lowther (pictured above right with Rep. Rodrigues and Beth Easterly), Barbara Bush, and Selena Howard! Congratulations ladies. “I won some of my own jewelry,” Ms. Lowther, a vendor at the Farmers’ Market, laughed.
