The Sakonnet Arts Network was pleased to mark its launch by sharing in sponsorship of Photo Day at Pardon Gray, May 17 and 18, with several Tiverton organizations --- the Land Trust, Arts Council, Open Space Commission, Tiverton Prevention Coalition and the Tiverton Schools.  Participants in the event were very “focused” as shown in this photo by Wayne Browning.

The Sakonnet Arts Network is a new nonprofit organization based in Tiverton, Rhode Island that will provide a spectrum of arts resources to Tiverton and all surrounding communities.   The group will offer programs year-round that enable community members to explore their creative sides, whether through a watercolor workshop, a music jam session, or a cooking class.

The organization's website will go live on July 18th.

The Sakonnet Arts Network also hopes to provide a forum for regional artists to connect with one another via the organization’s website which will feature a community arts calendar highlighting upcoming arts events. The network will sponsor discussion sessions and offer additional art classes for adults and youth.  It will bring community members together through music and theater performances. Finally, it will encourage cooperation among regional arts groups.   Upcoming offerings include a summer arts enrichment program in July for children entering second through fifth grades that will be held at the new Ranger School.  A series of workshops for adults are being planned for the fall.

The Sakonnet Arts Network has developed over the past year as a collaborative effort among area arts groups as diverse as Friends of Arts in Tiverton, the Tiverton Arts Council, ArtsExpress, Theater Direct, and representatives of the Tiverton Schools.  A Strategy Grant award of $45,000 from the Rhode Island Foundation is supporting this process through 2008.

If you are an artist, an advocate for the arts, or just curious about the newly formed Sakonnet Arts Network, please stop by and meet representatives of the organization at the Four Corners Art and Artisans Festival, in Tiverton, Rhode Island on Saturday, July 19 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
