It was a foggy, humid day on August 25, 2007 at 4:20 p.m.
when, with much fanfare, “duckmaster” Norman Buck
gave the signal, and the three duck handlers pulled the string and launched the
4th annual running of the Ducks at Allens Pond Sanctuary. 3752
quackers hit the water swimming, but only one was fated to win – Delta!!
Dartmouth
resident Pam Joyce, Delta’s owner, flew to New Zealand as the Grand Prize
winner of the 2007 Allens Pond Duck Derby. For her prize, “Dinner for two
anywhere in the world,” Pam ate at Kamkura
restaurant.
Pam and her
husband, Kevern, spent 20 days traveling all over New
Zealand’s north and south islands from the Bay of Islands to Christchurch.
Their trip included visits to Maori heritage sites, volcanic hot springs, Fox
Glacier and the remote Doubtful Sound in Fiordland
National Park. The pair traveled by car, foot, ferry and even the TranzAlpine scenic train. Along for the ride was a bright
yellow rubber duck symbolic of the one named Delta that won them the trip last
August.
Pam
described her entry into Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary Duck Derby as a near
miss: “I kept meaning to buy some ducks and forgetting – I finally picked up a
‘box of quackers’ (13 ducks).” She adds, “It was my first time entering.” Pam’s
Grand Prize was sponsored by Bayside Restaurant, Sylvan Nursery, Nye
Lubricants, Oppenheimer & Co., Milbury and Co.,
and Ralph's Chrysler Jeep. And as if she wasn’t lucky enough, Pam’s duck named
“Hotel” also won a $50 gift certificate to “Not Your Average Joe's” coffee
shop.
The 2008
Duck Derby is scheduled for August 9, 2008 and ducks are already on sale: $10
each, a flock of five ducks for $40 or a box of quackers (13 ducks) for $100.
