There were no fireworks but things were festive as Lees Market of
Westport held a Fall Festival to thank its customers for their loyalty and
support.
Reminiscent
of Westport Harvest Festivals gone by, Lees Market hosted a fall festival celebration
of their own Saturday, October 18, offering vendor samplings, tastings, children’s events, prizes, raffles, giveaways,
drawings, coupons, one day savings, in-store specials and a sensational pie
contest that supported the fund-raising efforts of local schools. Congratulations
to all the Raffle Winners!
Lees Market’s
popular “Let’s Lights It Up” fireworks display thanking area residents for
their patronage was cancelled due to inclement weather, prompting community-minded
owner Al Lees to put on a festival that drew hundreds of area residents into
Central Village to Westport’s social “hot spot.”
“The
turnout has been great, and were really happy to be here,” said Louella Hill of Narragansett Creamery (pictured lower left)
in Providence. “We are Rhode Island’s only cheese maker, and it’s a privilege
that Lees Market has chosen to market our product.”
Denis Auclaire of Auclair’s Marinated
Meats in Somerset was manning the grill and offering up tasty meats while wife
Dorothy and assistants Marisa, Alex and Amy of Somerset catered to hundreds of
guests the best Auclair’s has to offer.
The penned calf
pictured below right needn’t had to worry. He wasn’t on the menu, but rather
was there to entertain the kids.
There were
over forty vendors that sampled a variety of products throughout the day.
From left to right; (1)Sherry Maltais
of New Bedford and Bill Mealey of Walpole served up
Boar’s Head products to hungry visitors; (2) Lees’ employee Jenna
handed out the
scary balloons and worked the squash and pumpkin decorating table; (3) Peggy Lamoureux of Westport Rivers Vineyard and Winery; and (4)
Willow
Tree representatives fed those visitors still
hungry chicken salad fresh from the sauté pan.
But the
highlight of this free food and drink fun fair was a fabulous baking contest
where for $5 a patron could sample up to 44 homemade, absolutely scrumptious pies
and try and pick a favorite. Talk about a Herculean task! Lees Market manager
Jody Cody worked with Westport’s Superintendent of Schools’ Dr. Linda Galton to organize adult/child teams to make homemade pies
for the contest where proceeds would benefit the eventual winners’ local schools
of their choice.
There were 18
entries from Westport Elementary and Macomber Schools,
12 from Westport Middle School, 13 from Montessori School of Angels, and 1 from
Wilbur McMahon (Little Compton). Over $600.00 was collected though generous
donations from all the taste testers and over $400.00 from Lees Market
Employees and Lees Market.
The pie contest
winning teams were: The Blue Coffee Milks; Apple Dumpling gang; Hippy
Circle; Angelrific; The Cookin' Monsters; and The Goose and the Goblin.
They should have had a contest for best team name!
Beneficiaries
of the distributed contest money were: WESMAC PTO - $320; Westport Middle
School - $430; and Montessori School of Angels - $320.
Lees Market
and all their vendors appreciate your support, today and everyday.
