Extratropical storm Noel took center stage Saturday night and tried unsuccessfully to crash two charitable events in Tiverton - but the shows went on. The First Baptist Church on Old Stone Church Road hosted a Harvest dinner/theater, despite loosing power and running on a hastily installed generator. “The Ladies of the Mop” was featured in a short play at 6 p.m. and played to a full house. This hilarious comedy, directed by Edwina King, was last performed 23 years ago when Ms. King played the role that was portrayed by Lori Buckley. A free-will offering was taken to benefit local and regional outreach charities supported by the church.

A traditional harvest dinner with all the trimmings, although slightly delayed by the power outage, was served following the show. The kitchen worked overtime to deliver the deliciously prepared meal to about 100 guests! Pictures above.

The Meeting House at Tiverton Four Corners also came alive Saturday night with a bit of showbiz and the blues. It was a ‘Brotherhood’ Blues Bash!’ The special fund raiser for the expansion of theater arts in Tiverton featured actors from the Peabody Award-winning Showtime series ‘Brotherhood,’ plus chances to bid on film and television items including a Hollywood makeover from make-up artist Tricia Heine, scripts, wardrobe and movie posters, memorabilia from ‘Cheers,’ theater tickets to the upcoming award-winning ‘Ebenezer’ and the opportunity to win a walk-on role in an future film or television show from LDI Casting.

The ‘Brotherhood’ is a drama series on Showtime which premiered on July 9, 2006. The show tells the story of the Irish-American Caffee family. Set in an Irish neighborhood in Providence, the series reflects around two brothers on opposite sides of the law: one a gangster (Jason Isaacs) and the other a politician (Jason Clarke).

Cast members actively assisting with the auction were (pictured above lower left, from left to right):  Tom Kemp (Marty Trio), Gloria Crist (Vicki), Judith Kemp, Denece Ryland (Representative Silk), and son Ben. Georgia Lyman (Cassie Giggs), also present, is missing from photo.

According to Gloria Crist, Artistic Director of Theater Direct and event coordinator, the top money raiser was the walk-on role won by Liz Wordell from Little Compton at $500. The runner-up item was a session with a well-known Boston photographer which went for $210 to Allison Leblanc of Tiverton. In less than three hours about $3800 was raised.

“Proceeds are to be used to support community-wide and school-wide expansion of the arts,” Ms. Crist said. “The Tiverton High School will host a production of Ebenezer with about 50 actors aged from 6 to 60, all from in-state representing towns from as far as Jamestown and Providence. The production is scheduled for Dec 6th to the 9th,” she said. Matinee performances will be at 2 p.m. and evening performances at 7 p.m. Ticket prices will be $15 per adult and $12 for children 12 and under. Tickets will go on sale Monday Nov 19th.

The evening featured dancing to the music of Blue Spark (pictured above, lower right).
