Early Westport on display in new book from the Westport Historical Society!

“We signed and sold 60 copies of our new book published by Arcadia Publications,” said Jenny O’Neill, Westport Historical Society Director. “Partners Village Store has generously donated all proceeds to the Society, and we are very, very grateful!”

Members of the Westport Historical Society were on the quaint Victorian porch at Partners on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon for a signing of their new book: Images of America - Westport. And the seven contributing members (pictured to the left) were kept quite busy autographing copies. All proceeds at the signing are for the benefit of the Westport Historical Society. Contributing members seated from left to right: Cukie Macomber, Russ Hart, Barbara Moss, Jenny O’Neill, Tony Connors, Anna Duphiney, and Carol Schene. A veritable who’s who of Westport historians!

Members of the Westport Historical Society have carefully crafted this pictorial history, selecting images from the society’s archives as well as from the collections of local residents who have generously offered their memories of Westport’s past.

“I bought five copies,” said Jeanne Warner (below left) of Westport. “I think it’s terribly exciting!”

“80 percent of the images in the book are from our collection,” said Ms. O’Neill. “Many of them heretofore unseen. As we accessioned our collection many of these old photographs were re-discovered buried in the archives.” The other 20 percent came in response from the Society’s appeal to the community for images of early Westport from private collections to be used in the book. “Some of these photographs are absolutely fantastic,” WHS President Tony Connors said.

The reader can learn as much from the comprehensive text describing an image as they can from the image itself. This book should be in the collection of every Westport resident who prides themselves in their knowledge of Westport’s early historical record.

Copies of Images of America - Westport are on sale at the Westport Historical Society, as well as from Partner’s Village Store and Kitchen.
