NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Southcoast Radiology and Imaging Services, part of Southcoast® Health, is offering free mammograms for uninsured individuals during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Screenings will be offered at all 12 Southcoast Breast Imaging Centers across the region.

Statistics show that one in eight women over the age of 40 will develop breast cancer. Since patients are less likely to experience symptoms during the early stage of breast cancer, when tumors are small and most treatable, early detection and regular screenings are a necessity to reduce advanced stage diagnosis and often improve treatment outcome. The American Cancer Society (ACS) notes that it is very important for women to follow the recommended screening guidelines for detecting breast cancer at an early stage, before symptoms develop. The ACS recommends that women receive a regular, annual mammography beginning at age 40.

Data also shows that individuals without health insurance are less likely to have regular breast cancer screenings, significantly reducing their changes of early detection. That is why Southcoast Health is offering this important screening, at no cost, to any uninsured individual during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Southcoast Health also offers on-site patient navigators to assist uninsured patients in need of additional studies beyond a screening mammogram. The patient navigators are full-time Nurse Practitioners who specialize in breast care and help patients find their way through the healthcare system.

Appointments are required. To schedule a free mammogram during the month of October call central scheduling at 800-276-0103. Massachusetts residents will also have the opportunity to speak with Patient Financial Services for guidance on how to apply for health insurance. Rhode Island residents without insurance are welcome to take advantage of the free screenings, but will not qualify for financial assistance.

Southcoast Health System is a primary provider of breast health services in the region. Southcoast Breast Imaging Center is designated as Centers of Excellence by the American College of Radiology and offer 100 percent digital mammography services at all of their sites throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. Southcoast® Health today unveiled a new look and name for both the Southcoast Wellness Van and Southcoast Blood Mobile.

The Southcoast Wellness Van, formerly the Health Van, and the Southcoast Blood Mobile, formerly the Blood Donor Van, recently underwent complete external makeovers and name changes in line with Southcoast Health’s mission to promote the optimal health and well-being of individuals in the communities it serves. Southcoast Health focuses its attention on increasing access to services and caring for the entire population through wellness initiatives and disease management that are designed to limit — and preferably prevent — the patient’s need for acute care.

The Southcoast Wellness Van travels across the region bringing free health screenings and vaccinations into the communities of Southeastern Massachusetts. For more information and to schedule an on-site visit, please call Susan Oliveira, RN, at 508-973-8740 or email oliveiras@southcoast.org.

The Southcoast Blood Mobile collects blood donations for the Southcoast Blood Bank through community blood drives. The Southcoast Blood Bank is the only blood donation venue that directly supports the local blood supply, so you are helping to keep your local blood supply strong when you donate blood at a Southcoast-sponsored blood drive. To schedule a free blood drive with the Blood Mobile, please call Catherine Alegria, Southcoast Blood Donor Coordinator, at 508.993.0430 or by email at alegriac@southcoast.org .

Schedules for both mobile units can be found online at www.southcoast.org/van/.

The historic Westport Life Saving Station at the entrance to Gooseberry Island was rescued from demolition a few years back by its owner who inadvertently discovered its historical significance during a renovation of the property.

Today it represents an integral part of Westport’s past as an old seafaring and whaling community.

Left: this classic skiff seems to be sailing in a sea of grass at the Horseneck Point Life Saving Station.

Now, thanks to the efforts of the Westport Fishermen’s Association, the Life Saving Station is a cherished centerpiece of the Horseneck Point Life Saving Station and Visitors Center, which hosts many of the WFA activities throughout the year

.

So it’s no surprise that the 5th annual Classic Wooden Boat Exhibit will draw hundreds of people to 241 East Beach Road, all to view homebuilt classics and boats of historical significance that will be on display.

And again this year - miscellaneous marine equipment and antique lures will be for sale.

The Westport Fisherman’s Association is sponsoring their 5th Annual Classic Wooden Boat Exhibit on October 18th and 19th. Plan to stop by the Horseneck Point Life Saving Station, 241 East Beach Road Westport from 12-4:00 p.m. both days. This event is free and open to the public.

Featuring will be beautiful and classic hand built boats in and around the Life Saving Station and across the street on the landing. While in the visitor center Author John Conway will be signing his recent book "Buckrammer's Tales" an adventure with the century-old Buckrammer filled with ghost stories, mishaps and excitement of the oldest catboat still afloat.  And of course there will be some hand crafted models, antique boatbuilding and woodworking tools and other marine related items on display.

On Saturday around 12:30 p.m. they will kick off the weekend with three pilot gigs on-site from Westport, Dartmouth and Newport that have been modified for sport rowing. Weather permitting we will have demonstrations by all three boats and their passionate crews.  These pilot gigs were originally designed to deliver pilots out to incoming vessels off the Atlantic about to run aground. Today, pilot gigs are used primarily for sport with about 100 clubs across the globe.

Also on Saturday around 2 p.m. you don’t want to miss a special performance by The Spindle Rock River Rats with their delightful acoustic fiddle tunes and sea shanties.

There will also be refreshments, WFA merchandise and the annual Marine Equipment sale going on both days. So stop by and see what’s for sale!

Plan to join them for this wonderful community event where they celebrate the local talents of wooden boat builders and enthusiasts in the area and have a chance to talk with them about their craft. They hope to see you there!

BOSTON, MA, October 10, 2014 – Massachusetts Senator Michael J.
