The nation heads to the polls tomorrow, November 4th and there couldn’t be more at stake. Control of the U.S. Senate determines the level of national politics over the next two years, and that affects every U.S. citizen.

Four billion dollars will have been spent when this election is over and done with, making it the most expensive midterm in U.S. history.

But here in Massachusetts we also have much on our plate.

The governor’s race is leaning in favor of Republican Charlie Baker who now holds a slight lead over Martha Coakley. In the 2010 midterms only 14.2 percent of Westport voters turned out to cast their ballots. Don’t let only 15% of Westport’s voting base decide who will be our next Governor.

Although our local state senator and representative have little or no competition (Schmidt is unopposed, and Rodrigues handily defeated Masky in 2010) and five statewide positions are unopposed, there are four good reasons for Westport voters to head to the polls.

Four ballot questions’ Yes and No selections are confusing and ambiguous.

Four controversial questions are on the ballot, all are proposed by initiative petition and all can adversely affect the quality of life in Massachusetts as well as our pocketbooks.

Unfortunately voting for these questions can be confusing to many voters because of the questions’ lengthy wording and what a No or YES answer actually means.

For example, if you’re in favor of a law automatically increasing the state’s gas tax annually based on the Consumer Price Index without a vote of the Legislature, (Question 1), vote NO.

Or, if you’re against expanding the state’s beverage container deposit law (Question 2), vote NO.

Further, if you’re against casino gambling in Massachusetts (Question 3), vote YES.

And if you’re in favor of small businesses determining their own sick day policies, and not the state government (Question 4), vote NO.

Understand these four ballot questions before you go to the polls!

Ballot question 5 is non-binding, and was placed on the ballot to advise local legislators how their district feels about non-hospital facilities performing more than 10 abortions a year being licensed as “clinics’ and being inspected by the state’s Public Health Department every two years.

Voters should review their ballot question summaries carefully. Periodically increasing bottle deposit amounts or gas taxes automatically without a legislative vote is viewed by some as taxation without representation. On the other hand, proponents believe the  $1 billion this law would raise over the next ten years is needed to fix the state's crumbling roads and bridges.

The Council On Aging, in their annual Veteran’s Breakfast, celebrated those who fought and sacrificed so much to guarantee our freedom, and recognized those in the military still serving today in Afghanistan and other remote areas of our troubled world.

Over 60 veterans and their spouses were served up a complimentary breakfast of SOS (chipped beef on toast), waffles, pancakes, strawberries, whipped cream, orange juice and coffee at the Westport Senior Center.

It’s a very small tribute, but a greatly appreciated one by Westport veterans and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary who gathered and shared stories and memories of WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf wars.

COA Director Christine Quinn supported by a flock of volunteers led by Susan Sharpe was thanked by Veteran’s Service Officer, Jerry LeBoeuf for thinking of and thanking Westport veterans.

Town of Westport to honor our nation’s military heroes.

“The Council on Aging’s Veteran’s Breakfast kicks off a week of Veteran’s events that will lead up to our Veteran’s Day Memorial Service at Beech Grove Cemetery,” Veteran’s Services Officer Jerry LeBoeuf told the overflow breakfast crowd at the Westport Senior Center.

“I hope you all will join us next Tuesday to honor the Veterans of the United States Armed Forces,” LeBoeuf said.

The service will be held at the Veterans Memoriam Plot located at 947 Main Road, Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.
