Westport weathers ‘Hercules.’ ‘Ion’ on the way. The town fared better than most with snow accumulation of 6 to 8 inches, well below the forecast.

But bitter temperatures and biting winds put the seaside community into a deep freeze not experienced in years.

The first significant winter storm of the new year closed Westport schools, the Council on Aging, and the Transfer/Recycling Center among other town functions.

But on a positive note, East Beach Road was spared a beating when gusty north/northwest winds prevented a storm surge from overrunning the besieged road.

Inset: stone wall and farm buildings on Horseneck Road, Westport.

Light, fluffy snow made shoveling and clearing roads, driveways and walkways a much easier task, albeit a colder one.

Late Friday night will see clear skies with minus 6 degree temperatures and brisk NW winds that will bring out the heavy quilts and comforters.

A new winter storm nicknamed ‘Ion’ will slide through the northeast, maybe by Monday with artic air to follow.

Expect 49 degrees with rain on Monday, and 16 degrees with clear skies on Tuesday. Could be treacherous conditions when all that slushy, wet snow freezes on Tuesday!
