A 16-year-old Westport High School sophomore was killed and three other http://currentobituary.com/images/140271.jpgWestport High School students were hurt, one seriously, in a single car crash late Saturday night in the neighborhood of 1634 Drift Road in Westport.

Westport police reported that a 1997 Toyota Camry driven by a teenager crashed into a telephone pole at 11:24 p.m. near 1634 Drift Road. The car then flipped over and landed on the opposite side of the road. The rear passengers - one of whom was Erika S. Hall - were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the vehicle. Hall was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other rear passenger was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.

Westport Police said that the car was travelling southbound on Drift Road when it left the roadway and crashed into a telephone pole.

The two back seat passengers, neither of whom was wearing a seat belt, were ejected from the car. One, Ms. Hall, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other; an 18-year-old boy, was listed in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Rhode Island Hospital on Sunday.

The driver, a 16-year-old boy, and the 18-year-old front seat male passenger, both of whom were wearing seat belts, were treated and released at local hospitals with minor injuries. Police have not yet released their names.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Westport Police, Massachusetts State Police and the District Attorney’s office.

Under Massachusetts law, a 16-year-old driver is not allowed to drive with any passenger under the age of 18 for six months. It is not known at this time how long this driver had a license.

"On Saturday evening, there was a tragic accident in which one Westport High School student lost her life and three others were injured," Westport Superintendent Ann Marie Dargon said in a statement. "Our prayers and thoughts go out to the students and their families."

“During this sad time, our responsibility is to support each other and to assist students and families who may be struggling,” Superintendent Dargon said.

“Counselors and members of the Administrative Team met yesterday to put a plan in place. Each school in the District began their day with notification to staff regarding the availability of counselors. The high school schedule was re-arranged to provide for an Advisory Period for students first things this morning. Counselors were available for all staff and students. The counselors and administrators observed/visited with students throughout the day to ensure that students who needed support received it.

We will continue to offer support and guidance to our staff and students as needed.”

“They (the counselors) and the school did a wonderful job in a very difficult situation,” said Detective Antonio Cestodio.

Erika S. Hall, 16, of Westport, was the daughter of Nathan R. and Eileen M. (McQuoid) Hall of Westport.

Hall played field hockey at Westport High School and worked at Handy Hill Ice Cream in Westport.

Born in Fall River, she was a sophomore at Westport High School. According to her obituary, Erika lived to experience every ounce of joy and wonder that this world had to offer. This joy expressed itself in art, music and dance and most importantly the lives she touched — those who were privileged to know her as a friend. She leaves behind exquisite works of art, the fading strains of joyful music, memories laced with grace and beauty and most importantly lives forever changed by her boundless love. She possessed a soul so wild, free and exploding with love that this world could not contain her. We look forward to seeing her flourish in God’s new heaven and earth where there will be no limits and life will be free from the sting of death.

Survivors along with her parents include her paternal grandparents, Robert and Jeannie (DeYoe) Hall of Bronx, NY; maternal grandparents, Bill and Connie (Harpel) McQuoid of Westport; one brother, Brendan N. Hall of Westport; four sisters, Terriann L.C. Hall, Charis E. Hall, and Dakodah J. Hall, all of Westport, and Alessia Carrara of Bergamo, Italy; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Her funeral service, to which relatives and friends are invited, will be Saturday, May 3rd, at 10 a.m. at the Dartmouth Bible Church, 52 Morton Avenue, Dartmouth.

Calling hours will be Friday, May 2nd, from 2:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Lighthouse Assembly of God, 522 American Legion Highway, Westport.

Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Westport Education Foundation, P.O. Box 3213, Westport, MA 02790.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Potter Funeral Home, Westport.

The Dedee Shattuck Gallery is pleased to present Apophenia, a solo exhibition of works by renowned digital artist, animator, and local educator Harvey Goldman. This exhibition showcases recent works from four digital series along with examples of early ceramic pieces, which have inspired his digital surface textures. Animated shorts created by Goldman in collaboration with composer Jing Wang are also on view. This exhibit celebrates Harvey Goldman's retirement from 36 years of teaching at University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, where he currently holds the position of Chancellor Professor of Design.

Exhibition runs from April 30th - June 1st; artist's reception on Saturday, May 3rd from 5 – 7 p.m.

Complimentary champagne and cash bar at the artist’s reception.

This exhibit focuses on four recent series: the Extremities and Digits Series, the Forest Abstracted Series, and the Veiled Ancestors Series, and Landscape Series. Each series represents a body of work that examines particular forms through Goldman's unique digital layering process. Rich with color and texture, the images are painstaking amalgamations of photographic elements. The resulting imagery is curious and mystical, but close examination reveals familiar features, such as a lacy lichen edge or a patterned expansion of a fingerprint.

Goldman received his Masters of Fine Arts from University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is the recipient of National Endowment for the Arts, Massachusetts Cultural Council, and Ford Foundation grants. His work has been featured in three SIGGRAPH exhibitions, and is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, The DeCordova Museum, and the Iota Center for Visual Music.
