88 state boat ramp Saturday morning didn’t deter Westport-based Osprey Sea
Kayak Adventures from marshaling its group of beginning and intermediate
kayak instructors to teach the teachers the finer art of coaching kayak
operation and safety to novice kayakers.
Left: certified master coaches Todd Wright (left) and Carl Ladd provided
classroom-style and hands-on training at the Route 88 state boat ramp. American Canoe
Association (ACA) certified instructor Todd Wright presented basic and
advanced information to the group in a classroom style for half an hour
before taking to the water and putting the principles into practice. They taught “wet
exits,” paddle work to control a kayak, and working in open water, tide play,
and to work in surf and rocks. Wind, waves, and
current can present big challenges to any kayaker: what maneuvers and strokes
will keep your boat from broaching while paddling in a following sea; and what
combination of strokes and edging will allow you to maintain your heading and
not get blown down wind while paddling across it. They presented
the proper way to turn efficiently in wind and waves, and answered questions while
they paddled and played in the dynamic conditions of Westport Harbor and the
harbor entrance at the Nubble. For more
