Second
blaze in a week destroys Jillian Way residence. EverythingWestport.com Tuesday,
May 7, 2013 Photos/EverythingWestport.com except as noted Tragedy struck twice in a week as another Westport
family lost their home to a fast-moving fire that started on an outside deck,
according to Public Information Officer, Captain Michael P. Silvia. The fire destroyed a two-story colonial home at 89
Jillian Way, a quiet, meandering rural road in northwest Westport populated
with capes, colonials and contemporaries houses. “The fire was discovered around 8:30 a.m.by Robert Morotti of Jillian Way, who was walking his dog and saw
the smoke coming from the rear of the house,” Silvia said. “Mr. Morotti
banged on the front door to alert the occupants, 17-year-old Megan Sousa and
her elderly grandmother Maria Sousa, and got both of them out of the house
prior to the fire department’s arrival.” A 911 call was received by the Westport Fire Department
at 8:39 a.m. Tuesday morning that a fire was burning in the rear yard at 89
Jillian Way. Fire apparatus arrived approximately five minutes after
receiving the call, and firefighters discovered that the fire had already
ignited the rear deck and extended to the two and a half wood frame house.
They were able to control the fire by attacking it from inside the house as
well as using a master stream from the department’s ladder truck. Because there are no hydrants in the area, mutual aid
was called in to supply water as well as manpower to the scene. Responding to
assist Westport were Tiverton, Little Compton, Dartmouth Districts 2 & 3
and Fall River Fire Departments.
Westport Police closed Jillian Way during the duration of the fire
suppression activity. Fall River’s EMA rehab unit assisted firefighters with
drinking water. The fast moving fire Tuesday morning left the Westport
family without most of their possessions, fire officials said. The owner of the house is listed as Gelene
and Glenn Sousa. Because the house suffered heavy fire and water damage the
Red Cross was called to assist the family. The fire remains under the investigation of the
Westport Fire Investigation Unit and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s
Office, according to Captain Silvia. There were no reported injuries and the last fire
apparatus cleared the scene at 2:21 pm. 2nd Annual Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate Market. EverythingWestport.com Wednesday, May 08, 2013 The 2nd Annual

socialites, south shore urbanites, and coastal village residents all rubbed
shoulders sampling the best of the best that local vineyards had to offer. "We've had
over 600 people so far visit our tent," said Westport Vineyards hostess,
Lisa Stewart. "It's unbelievably busy!" Click here to view the hi-resolution photo album. Need Adobe Flash to view album? Click here! Rob, Bill, Bob,
