David Cole announces his candidacy for three-year term on the Westport Planning Board.

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

“My name is on the ballot for the three-year unexpired term on the Planning Board.

In January I requested to be appointed to this position vacated by the resignation of long-term Planning Board member and chair, John Montano, who I greatly respected.

At a joint meeting of the Board of Selectmen and Planning Board on January 22, my appointment was unanimously approved by both boards and I have served on the Planning Board since that time. While brief, my participation on the board has led me to believe I can make a useful contribution to its functioning especially in connection with updating the town’s Master Plan, but also in other aspects of its work. I therefore decided to be a candidate for the three-year term. I chose this three-year term rather than the five-year term because, at the time I was processing my nomination papers, I still hoped that the current chair of the board, David Emilita, would decide to seek re-election to that position.

Inset: David Cole speaks at the recent COA “Meet and Greet the Candidates” afternoon.

The Planning Board has played, and will continue to play, a very important role in shaping the future of the Town of Westport. I believe that my professional training and experience as an economist will be of use in the deliberations of the Planning Board. I have worked on national, regional and local planning projects in various parts of the world and collaborated with other faculty members in the design and teaching of a multidisciplinary regional planning course at Harvard.

In Westport I have served on the Town’s Dredging Project Committee and Estuaries Project Committee, and was chair of the latter committee for five year. I was on the Board of Directors of the Westport River Watershed Alliance for eight years, ending in 2011, and am currently on the advisory committee for the Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary. I have a strong commitment to protecting the natural environment and preserving the historical and community attributes of this very special place. I look forward to being able to support programs and projects that reflect those values in the next few years as a member of the Planning Board.”

Michael P. Sullivan announces his Write-in campaign for Planning Board.

Candidate is running against David Cole for the three-year unexpired seat.

EverythingWestport.com

Friday, March 29, 2013

“I would like to formally announce my write-in candidacy for the three-year unexpired seat on the Planning Board in the upcoming Westport election on Tuesday April 9th.

Recent experiences in local government affairs shed light on the necessity for more collaboration with all Town Boards and Departments in order effectively administer the bylaws, ordinances and regulations. The different responsibilities, expertise, and legal requirements for all town Boards and Departments are uniquely different and I pledge to work to improve the experience of all stakeholders. And do my best on behalf of the community.

I believe s that the health of a town is in the hands of its citizens and we all have an important role to play. On April 9th, please write in Michael P. Sullivan, 1380 Drift Road for the Planning Board 3-year un-expired term.

Topics for the Planning Board include of business and residential development, historic preservation and land-use in Westport. My experiences as a business analyst have taught me how misconceptions and miscommunications between groups can impede the progress o. As a consultant I find myself acting as a “translator” of sorts, and worked hard to ensure that the different understand the perspectives and needs of one another.

The work of the Planning Board is important to the health, safety and future of Westport. It from smaller aesthetic suggestions to larger development negotiations, the Board’s activities are important not only to our daily quality of life, but have a critical impact on Westport’s economic health As a member of the Planning Board, I would work to encourage the healthy economic development of these commercial areas, and at the same time, maintain Westport’s unique character.

Since arriving in Westport twenty-eight years ago, I’ve been consistently impressed with the high level of citizen engagement in town governance. Over time I have become active in local issues, eventually taking a leap to elected office (Westport School Committee 2009-current). I believe s that the health of a town is in the hands of its citizens and we all have an important role to play.

On April 9th, please write in Michael P. Sullivan, 1380 Drift Road for the Planning Board 3-year un-expired term.”
