Lafrance Hospitality Co. of Westport has announced plans to build a 90-room TownePlace Suites by Marriott at Rosebrook Place, a new, mixed-use development by the A.D. Makepeace Co. just off I-495/I-195 in Wareham.

http://www.aldenhill.com/images/previewfolder/Front_Page_Photos/lafrance_award.jpgThe hotel, which will feature an adjoining 300-seat function facility, is fully permitted and scheduled for opening in the late summer of 2014.

Lafrance owns and operates eight hotels and five function facilities in New England, and recently expanded its presence with the addition of two properties in Florida.

“We are extremely familiar with the Southcoast market, and feel very confident expanding our presence at this location,” said Richard L. Lafrance, CEO of the four-generation family business

The property will be developed through a land lease with the A.D. Makepeace Co., which also plans restaurants, retail, and apartments at the site.  The property is located on Route 28 at the intersection of I-495 and I-195.

“This will be a real benefit for the town of Wareham, which currently has no full-service hotel facilities and few accommodations for functions,” said Michael P. Hogan, president and CEO of the A.D. Makepeace Co. “I believe this will be a true asset to the region’s tourism industry as well as an attraction for other businesses. Furthermore, having an experienced regional operator undertaking this project will be an asset.”

Makepeace is the world’s largest cranberry grower, and the new hotel will look out over one of the company’s most picturesque bogs.

The project will result in approximately 50 full- and part-time positions when it is fully operational as well as substantial tax revenue, including the local option rooms and sales tax. Lafrance will be seeking tax increment financing with Wareham in order for the project to be financially feasible. Obtaining financing will be the next step in the process. Preliminary talks with local and regional lending institutions have occurred and Lafrance Hospitality plans to have financing finalized by spring.

Maria Walker and Charles Miller with guest curator, Henry McMahon at Dedee Shattuck Gallery.

Abstract paintings exhibit opens their 2013 season.

Dedee Shattuck Gallery is pleased to open its 2013 season with Maria Walker and Charles Miller, an exhibit of abstract paintings. Guest curator Henry McMahon shares two of New York’s emerging artists with our Southcoast New England audience.

Maria Walker’s work displays the tension between complete control and randomness. While chance, time and intuition are the driving forces of Walker’s painting process, she intercepts the chaos with carefully controlled elements such as unique polygonal stretcher bar compositions or the implementation of everyday systems such as the calendar or the color spectrum. Her process involves pouring hand-mixed pigments on to canvas, and then stretching the resulting compositions over non-conventionally shaped frames.

Charles Miller takes visual notes from observations of nature in Maine back to his New York Studio. Miller obsessively layers simple elements dissected from his sketches onto canvas. He is inspired by his experience of the natural world, but guided by design principles and a painterly language.

Bristol County Home & Garden Show at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School.

Home Depot of Somerset secured more than $40,000 in business from the one-day show, including a number of solar projects.

For the third year in a row, the Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce will host the Bristol County Home & Garden Show at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School on Saturday, March 16th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Presented by The Herald News and Taunton Daily Gazette and sponsored by Diman Regional, the Home & Garden Show will feature dozens of area vendors with special show-only deals. A number of last year’s vendors were able to secure some significant business due to their participation in the show. Home Depot of Somerset secured more than $40,000 in business from the one-day show, including a number of solar projects.

“Last year was our first year participating in The Home & Garden Show and we very pleased with the response we received from the Greater Fall River area,” said Home Depot Store manager Robert Lesieur. “We were able to assist many people with projects that they were looking to accomplish on their homes. We are looking forward to The 2013 Home & Garden Show and are very confident it will be just as successful for us as last year.”

Kim Gravel, of Decorative Landscapes, who will also host a seminar at the show on how to create a beautiful outdoor living space, is banking on continued success at the show that they have had since it first began.

“We have been with the show since its conception and continue to do the show because of the great success we have had. We love meeting new clients face to face and showing them hands-on what sets us apart in the marketplace through our display, videos and photos of before and after landscape design and completed landscaping and excavation projects,” said Gravel. “The Fall River Chamber and The Herald News do a great job at promoting the show and bringing in lots of potential clients.”

Gravel said hosting the seminar last year — and again this year — provides an added element of exposure as well as an extra educational component for consumers.

“The show helps to offer great educational material for the consumer with seminars throughout the day,” Gravel added. “I had great feedback from the seminar that I gave last year on enhancing curb appeal and I look forward to speaking again this year on creating beautiful backyard living spaces.”

Seminars will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning at 11 a.m. with Chef Fehmi’s “Tricks to Perfect Pasta,” to “How to Cook Healthy Meals and Minimize Your Time in the Kitchen” by Amy Delgiacco of Real Fitness Online at noon to Flint Armament’s “Gun Ownership In Massachusetts” to gardening tips like “Pull your weeds, not your back” by Westport Chiropractic. Other seminars will include self-employment tax tips and learning the ins and outs of home improvement contracts.

Admission to the event is free but a donation to The Herald News and Taunton Daily Gazette Holiday Fund is greatly appreciated. Door prizes and refreshments will also be available throughout the day.
