t9.jpgAttleboro's Chris Elgar took the ninth running of the Devin Laubi 5K Walk/Run with a respectably time of 17:44.

Elgar lost 23 seconds off his previous best of 17:21, probably because his nemesis, 2010 winner Eric Worsley, was absent this year, taking pressure off the Attleboro speedster.

The multi-event winner has dominated this race, winning four of the last five Laubi 5Ks.

In 2011, Christopher Elgar of Attleboro (17:28) edged out Eric Worsley of Fall River (17:31) in a near photo finish to win 7th Annual Devin Laubi 5K Walk/Run.

Charles Hoffshire of Westport finished 2nd at 18:38; and last year’s 3rd place finisher, Peter Danzell of Dartmouth, repeated that performance this year with a time of 19:18, almost a minute off last year’s performance.

The Westport charity sponsored this and other yearly fundraisers to assist those families with children who have cancer.

Fall River's Madalena Boudreau (pictured left) was 1st female at 21:55, considerable better than last year’s 23:14.

"I just work through the tightness and occasional pain," Boudreau said. "I manage a slightly slower pace and try to keep my competitive nature in check to keep from going all out to try to win."

Top New Bedford runner Jo Ann Mathews, 2010 and 2012 female winner, was noticeably absent this year. The injury-prone Mathews is a fierce competitor when she’s healthy.

Boudreau ran injured last year.

Amy Pacheco of Westport took a close 2nd female with a 23:21.

t24.jpgRounding out the top three women was Annette Ainsworth (pictured right) of Westport with a time of  24:44, slightly off last year’s pace (24:14) when she also took 3rd place female.

Under 18 runners repeat last year’s performances. Connor Toth of Westport, last year’s 1st place winner (21:28) again took 1st with 21:00; and Jillian Crespi of Berkley, last year’s 3rd place finisher (27:18) again took 3rd with a run of 27:24.

Tiverton’s Linnea Bjornson took the second spot at 25:37.

Cool runnings. The weather was crisp, breezy and full of sunshine, but didn’t produce any new records. However, a slightly larger turnout populated this year’s field of 5K competitors.

"Thank you to everyone that came out for a nice day supporting our work for those in need. We could never accomplish all we do without our many wonderful volunteers (unsung heroes)," Robin Burns-Laubi said.

Doors swung open for the summer season at the Art Stable Gallery during Memorial Day Weekend, and they were pleased to announce that they have added three highly acclaimed artists to their exhibitors.

These featured new artists are: Don Cadoret, a nationally recognized story painter; Sarah Desjardins, a popular watercolorist known for her local focus; and Teresa Mowery, who handcrafts striking designs with copper.

Above: the Art Stable’s thoroughbred artisans include from the left: Don Cadoret, Susan Medyn, Kelley MacDonald, Teresa Mowery, Karen Raus, Nancy Whitin, amd Kelly Milukas. Missing from the photo is Sarah Desjardins who was traveling.

Continuing at the gallery this year are Susan Medyn, Kelley MacDonald, Kelly Milukas, Karen Raus, and Nancy Whitin.

They work in a variety of mediums from pastel and oil to photography, encaustic, and watercolor to create works ranging from evocative to whimsical. Their modern and traditional approaches incorporate provocative perspectives, bold color and experimental techniques.

The opening weekend also featured an exhibition of works by children who attended artist Karen Raus's encaustic class. Encaustic is a process that blends hot wax and color to achieve a wide range of textures. (Pictured below.)

The Art Stable is situated in a charming barn that was once a carriage house for the Victorian farmhouse now the home of Partners Village Store and Kitchen.

The Gallery will be open weekends throughout the season. Additional hours will be on an informal schedule, and weekday openings can also be arranged by calling 774.930.5802 for an appointment.
