shovels

Letter to the editor. . . . .

My wife and I are both in our 80s and live on Route 6 in Westport. After the blizzard, we spent almost four hours trying to shovel a way out of our driveway.

Because we live on Route 6, we had to deal with constant plows that added more snow into the driveway. At one time, the snow height was more than four feet and it didn’t look like we were making a dent. Then this large backhoe came up to our property and asked if they could help us. He dug out our entire driveway before we even knew it.

When I asked how much we owed him, he told us nothing and wouldn’t take any money, not even $20 for coffee.

His name was Rui Cordeiro, owner of Distinctive Auto Body. It’s good to know there are still people out there that help. We could not have done it without him.

Thank you.

Nancy Rioux’s announces candidacy for School Committee.

EverythingWeastport.com

Saturday, February 16, 2013

Nancy Rioux’s candidacy for Westport School Committee has been confirmed for the upcoming April 9th town election.

Out of the fifty certified signatures required, Nancy tallied a total of sixty one and is now eligible for election on the upcoming ballot. There are two seats open in the School Committee, and Mrs. Rioux hopes to secure one of them.

Before moving to Westport three years ago, Mrs. Rioux was a longtime resident of Fall River. She has four children, three of which attend Westport Elementary, Middle and High Schools, and her oldest step-daughter is a graduate of Westport Schools. She currently resides with her husband, Kevin Rioux, and their three children, Jeremy, Brendon and Gianna.

A devoted mother and active participant in her children’s education and interests, Mrs. Rioux currently serves as a Parent Representative on the Westport Elementary School Council and previously served two terms as a Secretary on the SWS Youth Hockey Board of Directors. At the time she served as a Board Member, the league was heavily in debt and in serious danger of becoming insolvent. Aiding the board in many difficult decisions, together they reached their goal of becoming a debt-free league by addressing budgetary issues and conducting vigorous fundraising efforts.

Nancy Rioux is currently employed by New Bedford Public Schools where she has worked as a School Psychologist for approximately thirteen years. Working in an urban setting, she has faced many challenges over the years and clearly understands the importance of working in collaboration with teachers, administrators and families to advocate for the needs of all students. As a School Psychologist, she actively participates in professional development opportunities and training including Response to Intervention (RTI), Psychological First Aid/Post

Traumatic Stress Management and her current year long participation in the Universal Design of Learning Academy, which is sponsored in part by DESE (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education).

Mrs. Rioux also maintains a private practice consulting for clients including Acushnet Public Schools.

Mrs. Rioux strongly believes in addressing all needs of our diverse learners by recognizing the academic as well as the social emotional needs of our youth. Her mission in this campaign is to become an instrumental force in collaboration with the school committee, town and school district to provide quality education to all learners.

Her vision for the Westport Public School District is one comprised of innovative schools that invest in data driven initiatives, early learning, a rigorous curriculum and enrichment programming to help prepare our students to excel in either a post-secondary institution or the work force. It’s her hope, that as products of a challenging and innovative school system, students will be more likely to remain in their hometown as professionals, skilled laborers, parents and/or volunteers who will later inspire the next generation with their own invaluable skills and experiences further strengthening our town’s economic base.

She has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the community throughout the years, and is eager to share some of the priorities identified and targeted in her upcoming campaign. Mrs. Rioux has retained the services of local marketing and advertising agency, Reel 2 Real.

The agency is being tasked with managing all aspects of her campaign, from social media to media relations. All requests for statements should be directed to Keith Dias, her consulting publicist at the agency.

Westport Town Elections are scheduled for Tuesday, April 9th.

Fall River Chamber of Commerce to feature Bill “Spaceman” Lee as guest speaker.

EverythingWestport.com

Sunday, February 17, 2013

Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry will present former Boston Red Sox pitcher Bill "Spaceman" Lee as its keynote speaker for the 102nd annual meeting scheduled for Wednesday, February 27 at White's of Westport.

Lee, 66, was a Sox left-handed pitcher and part of the famed 1975 team that played the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series. Lee started two games in that series, although the Sox eventually lost to the Reds.

Lee played for the Sox from 1969-1978 and was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2008, holding the team record for most games pitched by a left-hander and the third-highest win total by a southpaw.

In August of 2012, Lee, a 65-year-old pitcher for the San Rafael Pacifics, became the oldest pitcher in baseball history to win a professional game. But unlike his only World Series trip, Lee completed this game to assure his victory.

Known for his antics off the field, Lee was featured in the 2006 documentary, "Spaceman: A Baseball Odyssey." He is coauthor of four books: "The Wrong Stuff," "Have Glove, Will Travel," "The Little Red (Sox) Book: A Revisionist Red Sox History," and "Baseball Eccentrics: the Most Entertaining, Outrageous and Unforgettable Characters in the Game."

The Chairman's Award will be given to Arthur Pacheco of AFLAC; the President's Award to Saint Anne's Hospital President Craig Jesiolowski; Business of the Year Award to People Inc.; and Ambassador of the Year to Chris Johnson of T.J. Russell Supply Co.

Registration and lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m., with the speaking portion to begin at 12:30 p.m. Attendance is $40 for members, $50 for non-members, $400 for a table of 10 and $500 for a corporate table. Program book sponsorship also is available: a half-page ad is $150; full-page ad is $250; and inside cover, inside of back cover or back cover is $500.
