August brings hot days at the beach, chicken barbeques, and all manner of fundraisers.

And summer brings vacationers that enjoy them all.

But none of these activities are quite like the annual St John the Baptist’s Parish Fair and Auction. This is one social event that has something for everyone!

And the sugared malasadas, those Portuguese donuts without a hole, are to die for.

If you like chicken barbeque at its best be sure to get your $12 tickets before Saturday morning – they go fast!

Each year members and volunteers pull together one of the largest Westport church events of the season. Spread out over two days, activities included: a silent auction, Country Kitchen, entertainment, ethnic and traditional foods, quilt raffle, Grandma's Attic, New England (country) auction.

Was anything left out? Oh, right, this year the Fair has a magician - Richard Archer, a class magic show for kids of all ages. Archer kept a very large crowd spellbound with his wry humor, lively animation, and quality magic acts.

And the pies: there were spaghetti pies, French meat pies, chourico pies, salmon pies and chicken pies – a pie for all occasions! And of course, there were blueberry and apple pies, if you had any room left!

Each year a group of church quilters also raffle off a hand-stitched, hand-quilted, gorgeous queen-size quilt to die for! This year the quilt is named “Crown of Thorns.”

“There’s a lot of quilting in this year’s quilt,” exclaimed Joan Brenckle (pictured above in photo) of the women’s quilting group responsible for this year’s beauty.

A $12 chicken barbeque was held Saturday afternoon, and a pancake breakfast is at the church hall all Sunday morning. If you miss these church-sponsored meals, you’re not stretching your food dollars!

“The whole fair is a family tradition,” said one fair goer. “It’s wonderful!”

Handling the country auction “can bidding” was Janice Noiseux of Westport. “There are a lot of tickets to be filled out,” she said. In this style of auction you buy a number of tickets, priced by the quantity, anywhere from $1 to $20.You drop a ticket into an item’s auction can, which is used later to draw a ticket from to determine the winner. There are so many auction items, each with its own auction can. The odds are that you will win something, if not the item you really want!

Above left: volunteer Clara Viveiros of Main Road sugars up the malasadas.  Right: Visitors drop their raffle tickets into the hundred or so cans, keeping their fingers crossed they’ll win the right item!

Above left: quality craft vendors rounded out the Parish Fair’s shopping experience.  Right: Kathy (left) and friend Helen take out a moment for a delicious lemon and fig square.

Above left: Jim Potter turns a rack of chicken halves in preparation for the early evening chicken barbeque.  Right: the line was long as hungry ticket holders don’t need a dinner bell for this scrumptious meal.

Believe it or not, it’s been a decade of ducks at Mass Audubon’s Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary – and these tenacious, well-trained rubber racing ducks will line up to conquer the channel at Barney’s Joy on Saturday, August 17th, followed by the Ducky Dash 5k, Kids Totally Quackers Obstacle Course and Duck Derby Festival on Sunday, August 18th.   All of Sunday’s events take place at the sanctuary located at 1280 Horseneck Road in Westport, Massachusetts.  While paid registration is required for the 5k race and obstacle course (and includes a duck entry if you register before August 16th) – the Festival is free and open to the public.

As the race takes place on private land; you must contact the Sanctuary to register.  You can do so by calling 508.636.2437 or emailing duckderby@allenspond.org.

The adopted ducks will race on the incoming tide from Buzzards Bay into Allens Pond, and the first to cross the finish line wins the Grand Prize - Dinner for Two Anywhere in the World!  - (includes airfare and two nights lodging).  Last year, Linda and Ron Gaudet’s duck Madge took that prize and sent the lucky couple off on the trip of a lifetime to New Zealand.

In addition to the Grand Prize, there are 55 other great prizes to win, including our elusive Stealth Duck, the “slow and steady” Slacker Quacker, who always takes last place and, in honor of 10 years of racing his quacker off, the Decade Duck.

Sunday kicks off at 8 a.m. with the second running of one of the region’s most scenic courses, the Ducky Dash 5k.

Preregistration is $30 and includes a racing duck.  Onsite registration will also be available the morning of, but you will not receive a duck entry.  Following the 5k, it’s time for kids ages 10 and under to get a little crazy on our Totally Quackers obstacle course.  Registration for both events can be done by visiting http://www.active.com.  At 11am, all post-race festivities commence on the grounds near the field station from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and will include a $5.00 barbecue lunch, games and crafts for kids, educational exhibits, live music with Neal McCarthy & Friends, a video replay of the race, a silent auction, and live plant auction. All derby proceeds will be used to support programs at Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary.

Not sure where to get your ducks? Go to the Allens Pond Web site at www.allenspond.org to adopt your derby entry and for all general event information and announcements. Entrants can purchase one duck for $10, five for $40, or thirteen for $100. Prize winners need not be present to win.

Westport Summer Film Series Celebrates "TRANSFORMATION."

Critically acclaimed documentaries to be shown in August.

EverythingWestport.com

Tuesday, August 06, 2013

Following on the success of its 2012 Summer Film Series, the Westport Cultural Council again offers three critically acclaimed documentaries in August. The 2013 Summer Film Series takes place the weekend of August 16-18 at the Dedee Shattuck Gallery in Westport.

The series opens on Friday, August 16 with Buck, a documentary that tells the real-life story of the man who inspired Robert Redford's film The Horse Whisperer. Buck Brannaman travels the country helping people with horse problems ease them using gentle and respectful techniques.  Or, as he puts it, helping horses with people problems. His empathy for the strong, sensitive animals has evolved from his own terrifying experiences as a child coping with an abusive father. As the film progresses, we come to understand that Buck's compassionate regard for horses mirrors the broader principles on which he lives his life.  Winner of the U.S. Documentary Audience Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and several other prestigious awards, Buck is a compelling and visually stunning film that resonates even outside the equestrian world.

On Saturday, August 17, the 2010 documentary Marwencol will be screened. Beautifully crafted, hypnotic, strange, and extraordinary, it is a film that takes hold gradually and surely. Mark Hogancamp was a carpenter and showroom designer who survived a brutal attack and a nine-day coma to find himself physically and emotionally damaged and unable to work. In an attempt to restore his lost identity, the shy and fearful Hogancamp begins to build an amazing miniature town that he calls Marwencol, populated by Barbie-sized doll people who represent his own friends and family — some real and some fantasy. When the meticulously creative photographs he takes of Marwencol are discovered by the New York art establishment, he must decide if he is ready to leave the safety of his private upstate world.  Marwencol was voted Best Documentary of the Year by the Boston Society of Film Critics.  It's a moving story about the healing power of creativity, imagination, and acceptance.

The series closes on Sunday, August 18 with Inocente, the 2013 Academy Award winner for Short Documentary Subject. At the start of the film, Inocente Izucar is a teenage girl in San Diego with a colorful and unique style and bold artistic talent. She is also homeless and desperate to navigate through a troubled relationship with a distant, alcoholic mother. When she connects with a nonprofit arts organization providing support and services to young people dealing with homelessness, domestic violence, and other challenges, Inocente is selected to participate in the organization's annual art show. With creative determination and energy, she completes 30 paintings for the show, and in the process begins a journey of discovery and confidence.

Terry Somerson, one of the producers of the series, said that the concept of transformation reveals itself in each of the films. "On the surface, Buck is about the deep connection between people and horses, but in a wider sense the film is actually about humans, their relationships, and how they overcome life's roadblocks. Marwencol is quiet and quirky but viewers will ultimately love Mark, his story, and the people who help him and never judge him. They want to see him heal and succeed. And Inocente is absolutely heart wrenching but also triumphant. It's about the amazing strength and creativity of a disadvantaged 15-year-old girl who refuses to be beaten down as she sets out to follow her dreams. We especially invite the teens of our community to see this film."

The Westport Summer Film Series, August, 16, 17 and 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Dedee Shattuck Gallery, 865 Main Road, Westport. Free of charge.  Please note that the films are not rated. For information email info@westportculturalcouncil.org or call the Dedee Shattuck Gallery at 508.636.4177. The Westport Summer Film Series is funded by a grant from the Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust administered by the Bank of America.
