Assessors delayed in releasing 2013 property values. EverythingWestport.com Thursday, April 18, 2013 Fiscal 2013 Westport property values, recently approved by the Board
of Assessors, have finally been certified
by the Department of Revenue (DOR), Bureau of Local Assessments, nine days later than previously announced. “We were supposed to have received them prior to Monday, April 8th,”
Sharon Potter said. “We got them emailed to us late last night from the DOR.” A previous press release from the Assessors said the values would be
available on the Town’s website starting Monday, April 8th. “That didn’t happen,” Assessors’ principle clerk Sharon Potter said.
“The DOR certified the values on Wednesday, April 17th, nine days later than
projected.” “Our vendor, AppGeo, who provides us with our GIS mapping,
haven’t yet posted the current 2013 values to their website, http://www.mapgeo.com/WestportMA/,”
Potter said The Board of Assessors of Westport announced last week that Fiscal
2013 certified property values
have been established for residential, commercial, industrial, mixed-use
properties, properties valued under Chapter 61, 61A, 61B and apartments of
four or more units. They were supposed to have been available to the public starting
Monday, April 8, 2013 ending at the close of business Friday, April 12,
2013. Hours were to have been from
8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at Assessors Office, Town Hall, 816 Main Road. The tax rate is determined by Fiscal 2013 town spending as measured
against 2012 property values, plus a 2 1/2 percent increase plus long-term
debt and bonds. The property values will be posted on the Town’s website: www.Westport-ma.gov
under Town Departments: Assessors. A taxpayer wishing to question his/her new assessment should wait
until they receive the actual tax bill.
They may then file an abatement application for overvaluation with the

Inset:
Westport’s Dennis Broadbent took first prize with his oil painting of netted
fish, described by Judge Roger Kizik as “certainly
bountiful, visceral, a very expressive handling of the medium.” Jacklyn William, another well-known Westport
artisan took second with her acrylic painting of flowers. Dartmouth’s Wanda Edwards was awarded third place by Judge Kizik who was quite taken with Edward’s turtle. “Great
print and fabric motif, a more considered cobbling of the image. I love the
mystery and wry character of the head.” Each artist submitted up to two paintings, drawings, photography or
small 3-dimensional pieces that interpreted the theme, Nature’s Bounty. All
work was original and recent. The juried show accepted submitted entries based on technical skill, creativity,
and interpretation of the show theme. All entries will be on display over the
weekend. Awards were selected by guest judge Roger Kizik
Thursday afternoon, and will be presented at the Awards Reception on Sunday,
April 21st from 3 - 5 p.m. About judge

Linda Rogers’ collage took first prize in photography. Right:
Carlton Nickerson received honorable mention in photography - “the window
element is a real ruse, creates ambiguity, it fits the moment,” Kizik said.
Wanda Edwards’ third place winning entry
described by Kizik as “Great print and fabric
motif, a more considered cobbling of the image. I love the mystery and wry
character of the head.”
Above:
Judge Roger Kizik was impressed with the Jacklyn William’s application of the medium and said the
painting was a real “standout.”
Left: Susan Strauss of Westport received honorable
mention for her oil described by Kizik as “on the
edge of abstraction; the color invokes abstract extraction – it reminds me of
the thickets that are so abundant here. The openness and ambiguity can cause
the mind to wander within.” Right: The “thought-provoking” magic
carpet of produce by Christina Glaser received honorable mention and the
admiration of Kizik who said it was very
reminiscent of Belgian surrealist artist Rene Magritte.
Above: Accomplished artisan Heide
Hallemeier received first honorable mention for her
pastel of seashore imagery - “good use of the medium, very translucent with
the submergence of the shells, managed the washes well with expressionist
result.” Below: New WAG president Mary Benefiel manages
her first exhibition.

her oil entitled ‘Westport Harbor Hollyhocks.’ Ms. Benefiel’s
