planting a 6 foot "stewartia" at the Town
Hall Annex. WRG Garden Fair to be held Saturday,
May 19 at the Macomber Community House on Main Road
opposite the Westport Grange.
Hats off to this group
for beautifying Westport one small plot at a time. Club member Carolyn Berube said the tree will bring a new treat with each season. "In winter it
shows a beautiful mottled bark, in summer it has bright camellia-like
flowers, and in the fall the foliage turns a bright red," Berube said. Tim's Lawn Service
will help maintain the tree, as they do with several other WRG projects. The planting is partly
to celebrate the WRG's 10th anniversary, and hopefully will bootstrap a
series of tree plantings around town, according to member Linda Bramwell. Susan Dutra and
Barbara Wood started the garden club in 2002. The first Arbor Day,
held on April 10, 1872, encouraged individuals and groups to plant and care
for trees, and resulted with an estimated one million trees planted that day.
The club is also responsible for thousands
of daffodils planted around town, the most prolific planting can be seen at
the new fire house on Hix Bridge Road. The club, now 58 members strong, encourages
you to drop in on one of their monthly meetings the first Saturday of each
month, club President Pat Butler said. Contact president Linda Bramwell

helpful hand are club members from the left: Geri Fortier, Chris Earle, Linda
Bramwell, Gabriele Zybarth
(partially hidden behind tree), Jennie Elias, Carolyn Cody, and Carolyn Berube, Over 3000 daffodils were planted last year
in front of Westport's new Fire Station #1 by the gardening club with grants
from the Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust. The club is
also responsible for the daffodils at the Westport Free Public Library, and created
and maintains the Town hall walkway and garden, and the "Welcome to
Westport" sign on Hix Bridge Road.
WRG Garden Fair to be held Saturday,
May 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Macomber
Community House on Main Road opposite the Westport Grange. The club's annual Garden Fair supports its
beautification efforts with proceeds from its annual Garden Fair. They offer perennials, plants from their
members' gardens, compost, tools and other garden-related goods from club
members and vendors. WRG member Marianne Naedele
said sales of "plants and mulch give the Westport club a much needed
boost to their community projects such as the “Rockery” at the new fire
station." Click here to read more about WRG's 2011's garden fair with
