the 8th running of the WFA's Race for the Water. Acushnet's
Daniel Croteau (184) set a taxing pace of 27:40 to win the 8th running of the Westport Fishermen's Association's
'Run for the Water' 8K road race, besting by a mere 6 seconds last year's
winner, "Scottish" Scott Anderson. "There were too many children running
today," quipped New Bedford's Anderson. "These aging legs had a
hard time keeping up." Cool running. Under beautifully azure skies,
temperatures in the 60s, and with the light green hint of spring in the
beachside foliage, almost 220 runners and walkers took the challenge to
support the Westport Fishermen's Association. Despite the glorious weather and mild
winds, no records were broken except one. The perennial Mother's Day event always draws a good
crowd of runner, "but nothing like this year's participation,"
WFA's Jennifer Gelinas
said. "We
had 170 pre-registrations, the most ever, and 50 registrations on race day." "Most who pre-registered showed
up," said WFA race coordinator, Jennifer Gelinas.
"It was a great day!" Highly-rated runner Mimi Fallon of
Walpole (30:41) won the female division and took 5th overall, beating last year's
top woman finisher, Christine Anderson, by 1 minute 6 seconds. Anderson is a
two-time winner of the WFA's 8K. "I ran Louie's (Louie's Run, an April 5K race at
Buttonwood Bark, New Bedford) and was kind of tired after that event," she said.
"I didn't work very hard over the winter getting into shape, but I felt
pretty good today." Christine Anderson was last year's top
female finisher at 34:00, and ran a respectable 32:05 in 2010 where she took women's
second place. She was also the top female finisher in 2009 with a time of
30:27. This woman can run. Above left: 5th place finisher and top female runner
Mimi Fallon of Walpole clocked in at 29:35.
Above right: Christine
Anderson of New Bedford finished second and 11th overall at 31:47, over a
minute off her winning pace in 2009. Above: Women's third place finisher, Karen Quinn
(88) of Somerset, finished 17th overall. Here she is shown starting in the
middle of the pack. Left: New Bedford's “Scottish” Scott Anderson second place
at (27:46) was somewhat off his best time in this race of 27:10. Right:
David Constantino of Cumberland, RI, last year's third
place finisher at 29:52, again took third this year at 29:04, improving his
time by over two minutes in three years. Look for a breakthrough in 2013. Left: The Anderson's of New Bedford, shown here with top
finisher, John Pelletty of Westport, the sole wheelchair
entrant, are making the WFA 8K a family affair. Right: Jennifer Gelinas (far left in picture) of the Westport Fishermen’s
Association was kept busy checking in a record-setting amount of pre- and
race day registrations. Eric Narcisi
of Charlestown holds the Westport Fishermen’s Association 8K record of a
blistering 25:19 set in 2009. Heather Capello
holds the female record of 27:59 set in 2006. Click here for race's
overall results from www.RaceMenu.com. Above: Runners and
walkers alike enjoyed the course which included an oceanfront promenade along
Horseneck Beach. Short sleeve race T-shirts went to
the all the pre-registered runners. Cash prizes were awarded to top 3 overall
male/female winners. Ribbons went to the top three male and top three female
runners in each of the four age categories. There was a post race raffle with
prizes donated by generous local sponsors.
