t19.jpgAcushnet's Daniel Croteau (184) set a taxing pace of 27:40 to win the 8th running of the Westport Fishermen's Association's 'Run for the Water' 8K road race, besting by a mere 6 seconds last year's winner, "Scottish" Scott Anderson.

"There were too many children running today," quipped New Bedford's Anderson. "These aging legs had a hard time keeping up."

Cool running.

Under beautifully azure skies, temperatures in the 60s, and with the light green hint of spring in the beachside foliage, almost 220 runners and walkers took the challenge to support the Westport Fishermen's Association.

Despite the glorious weather and mild winds, no records were broken except one.

t27.jpgThe perennial Mother's Day event always draws a good crowd of runner, "but nothing like this year's participation," WFA's Jennifer Gelinas said.

"We had 170 pre-registrations, the most ever, and 50 registrations on race day."

"Most who pre-registered showed up," said WFA race coordinator, Jennifer Gelinas. "It was a great day!"

Highly-rated runner Mimi Fallon of Walpole (30:41) won the female division and took 5th overall, beating last year's top woman finisher, Christine Anderson, by 1 minute 6 seconds. Anderson is a two-time winner of the WFA's 8K.

"I ran Louie's (Louie's Run, an April 5K race at Buttonwood Bark, New Bedford) and was kind of tired after that event," she said. "I didn't work very hard over the winter getting into shape, but I felt pretty good today."

Christine Anderson was last year's top female finisher at 34:00, and ran a respectable 32:05 in 2010 where she took women's second place. She was also the top female finisher in 2009 with a time of 30:27.

This woman can run.

Look for a breakthrough in 2013.
