June 01, 2012 Legislators Stand Out with Local
Businesses for State House Small Business Week 2012
Continuing this wonderful
tradition and recognizing the important contributions of our nation’s nearly
27 million entrepreneurs and small businesses to the nation's economy,
President Barack Obama has designated May 21st through the 26st as National Small Business Week. The
Legislators kicked off the week’s festivities by visiting local businesses in
their home towns to thank them for their incomparable contributions to the
Commonwealth’s economy and to promote shopping small and local this
spring. Representative Schmid took part
in the celebration by visiting ABLE Associates, a temporary staffing agency
in Fall River, and Westport Tire and Atlas Pizza in Westport.
“State House Small Business Week represents a wonderful
opportunity to reflect on the importance of our state’s nearly 585,000
entrepreneurs and small business owners in our local communities,” said Rep.
Linda Dorcena Forry,
House Chair of the Joint Committee on Community Development and Small
Business. “As policy makers, it’s extremely important for us listen to
and make sure that their needs and concerns are reflected in the laws and policies
adopted by the legislature. Today’s "On Main Street" event represents the perfect occasion for legislators to
connect with and thank our local businesses for their hard work and
dedication.” “On Main Street” is the first in
a series of events planned for State House Small Business Week 2012,
an initiative organized by the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Community
Development and Small Business in conjunction with National Small Business
Week. All 200 legislators were invited by Senate President Murray,
Speaker DeLeo and the Committee Chairs to visit
with small businesses in their district as a way of collectively
demonstrating the Legislature’s commitment to the small business community in
Massachusetts.

Opening receptions, Q&A sessions, and exhibitions are free and open to

Schultz collects, carefully examines and recreates
beach detritus in delicate porcelain. Her sculptures are strikingly
realistic–it is difficult to believe that they are not cast from life—but
with her meticulous recreation, each item becomes a meditation, steeped in
deep thought and careful consideration. Schultz then curates her objects into
poetic collections, composed with 16th and 17th century still life paintings
in mind, but still with a playful haphazard sense of being washed up onshore.
The stark white porcelain is transformative- giving the objects a sense of
preciousness and stillness. Schultz is particularly interested in examining
these objects as artifacts of time passing, and the influence of humans and
nature on each other and on themselves.
Sea, Shore, Sky, and Ice is contemplation
on our ever-changing landscape. The work of these two artists, though beautiful
and quiet, speaks boldly about human scale. In a literal sense, the viewer
becomes aware of his or her scale in relation to Schultz’ delicate porcelain
objects, and Nicholas Whitman’s images, particularly those of enormous
monumental icebergs. The works also address scale in terms of time- the
relatively short scale of our human lifespan in relation to that of our
global one, and in contrast- the vast scale of the legacy we leave on our
planet.
