EverythingWestport.com Tuesday, April 24, 2012 Photos/EverythingWestport.com Coming soon to Westport are three new
locations for retail services bound to please the most demanding of
consumers: banking, medical care, and a brick oven pizzeria.
The building, under construction, will be
located behind Westport Family Medicine at 829 Main Road. It will be a 6,500-square-foot,
single-story building. “It’s an opportunity to expand Prima CARE’s
reach,” Callen said. “It’s well-positioned between
Fall River and Dartmouth. It’s a nice setting ... a nice place to heal.” More.
The former Fred and Annes
Restaurant on Main Road, Central Village got a complete refurbishing and will
be opening soon as a brick oven pizzeria. Look for a June 1st opening.
The 160 year-old Citizens~Union Savings Bank transitioned to a new name in January of
2012. Their new name, BayCoast Bank, better reflects the geographic region they
serve, and the new name clearly establishes them in the market and removes
any confusion with banks that share part of their former name. Opening is projected
by early summer. A Kennedy kicks off Rodrigues campaign. EverythingWestport.com Sunday, April 30, 2012
The third generation Kennedy scion, who hopes to carry the family mantle
back to Washington, was on hand Sunday morning to support Rodrigues' bid for
a second term as Westport's State Senator from 1st
Bristol and Plymouth District. Following his
grandmother's advice, Kennedy, who will attempt to capture this fall the
congressional seat held for almost two decades by Barney Frank, delivered a
few remarks of support, slapped Rodrigues on the back and sat down to
breakfast. Over 400 guests,
including everybody who was somebody, were in attendance. The event unofficially
was not a fundraiser but an opportunity for folks to support their popular
and hard-working senatorial candidate. Elizabeth Warren, presumptive
Democratic nominee for the seat currently held by U.S. Senator Scott Brown, was
scheduled as a guest speaker but was unavoidable detained in western
Massachusetts and couldn't make the event. Senator Rodrigues is
very active in his district and sits on eight committees:

Governor Timothy P. Murray at the recent MMSI "Game Changer." The initiative, aimed at underserved
students, has successfully expanded access to rigorous, college-level
advanced placement courses in high schools across the Commonwealth. Founded by Durfee
High School, the success of this program has compelled local officials,
employers and community leaders to come together to highlight the state’s
largest Math & Science program, and discuss how this program can benefit
other schools throughout the SouthCoast. He also fought
tirelessly to keep the Meditech Corporation in
Freetown, and has been Westport's voice in the Massachusetts legislature for
16 years.

In 2002 a unique public/private partnership
was formed to permanently protect the largest forest in Bristol County and to
create one of the largest tracts of contiguous forest in the Commonwealth. Facts about the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve. The City of Fall River, The Trustees of
Reservations and Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and
Division of Fish and Game joined together to establish the Southeastern
Massachusetts Bioreserve. At nearly 14,000-acres,
the Bioreserve stretches from Assonet Village in
Freetown all the way to Hixville in Dartmouth,
covering the entire eastern half of Fall River in between. Protecting native biodiversity, historic
sites and Fall River’s drinking water supply were major goals of the Bioreserve, however, it was the increased public access
for outdoor recreation and educational programs that got most people excited
about this amazing natural resource. Over the past 10 years thousands of
children, adults, and families have been introduced to the Bioreserve through guided nature programs, hikes, bike
rides, and volunteer projects that have helped to build a personal connection
between the residents of southeastern Massachusetts. and the wilderness right
in their own backyard. Each year in early May the Bioreserve Big Walk takes intrepid hikers across the full
length of the Bioreserve to experience its
immensity by the soles of their shoes. This year on Saturday, May 5th at 9:00 a.m.
hikers will gather at the Freetown/Fall River State Forest Headquarters on
Slab Bridge Road in Assonet. A special welcome is planned by the Bioreserve partners to celebrate the 10th anniversary of
the Bioreserve and free refreshments will be
provided by the Friends of the Freetown/ Fall River State Forest to help
hungry hikers fuel up before beginning their journey. At 10:00 am the walk will step off into the
forest taking hikers across state land and onto property owned by Fall
River’s Water Department that has only recently been opened after nearly 100
years of being off limits to the public. Along the way the trail passes
through pine/oak forest with a lunch break at Dr. Durfee’s
Mill Pond, where the crumbling walls of the old acid mill can still be seen
along Mill Brook. After lunch, the Esker Trail passes through
swamps and past vernal pools to the Copicut Hill
fire tower with sweeping 360 degree views. The walk winds down on Corduroy
Path which passes through the King Phillip Cedar Swamp to the Watuppa
Reservation Headquarters on Blossom Road in Fall River where weary walkers
can catch a ride back to their cars. The full hike is over 10 miles, however,
pickups will be offered every 2-3 miles for those who don’t want to do the
entire walk. The Big Walk is free and open to all ages.
Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots and bring
insect repellant, sunscreen, a water bottle and a bag lunch. Extra water and
