"We vaccinated a lot of cats and dogs," Lambert said. "We also sold a lot of dog licenses. For a first time clinic it was very successful."

"All the people I spoke with who came in to utilize the licensing service were very happy because for them it was hard to get to Town Hall during normal working hours," Lambert said.

Lambert, a Board of Health member, plans to make the clinic an annual event. She also plans to hold a second clinic in the very near future.

"$10 for a rabies shot is a bargain," Lambert said. "Especially because the one-year and three-year shot are the same price."

Dr. Brito administered between 25 and 30 shots, and Lambert sold between 8 and 10 dog licenses.

"It's really important to get pet owners on a schedule," Lambert said.

"A three-year rabies shot must be given within 30 days of expiration from the last one-year rabies shot," Lambert said. "Otherwise you'll have to get your pet another one-year shot."

"Once a three-year rabies shot is administered, you can get the three-year shot thereafter," she said.

Dr. Brito was very happy with the turnout, and is also eager to hold a second clinic.

"I want to thank the Chief (Fire Chief Brian Legendre) for allowing us to use the fire station," Lambert said. "It was a great location, very accessible and spacious for pet owners to bring in their cats and dogs."

Rabies vaccination for pets is required by law.

Rabies is a disease affecting all mammals, including man, caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system, including the brain. Symptoms may include unexplained aggression, impaired locomotion, varying degrees of paralysis, and extreme depression or viciousness. After the onset of symptoms, terminal paralysis and death are imminent

According to the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, Massachusetts law requires that dogs, cats and ferrets must be vaccinated for rabies.

Massachusetts law also requires that vaccinations must be administered by the time the animal is six months old. The second vaccination should be given between 9-12 months after the initial vaccination.

Booster shots are necessary for rabies. There are different vaccines available that are licensed for use in dogs and cats. Some vaccines are approved for period of one year and others for three years. It should be noted that a four year vaccination has been approved for cats. Your veterinarian should provide you with a vaccination schedule for the particular vaccine that was used for your animal.

"If you buy an older dog or cat, but was not given a certificate of vaccination for rabies, take the animal to a veterinarian within 30 days of acquisition to have it vaccinated," Lambert said.

"At 6 p.m. on March 28, 2012 in the Town Hall Annex on 856 Main Road we came together in an officer’s call with intent to create the establishment of a Veterans Council," said Veterans Service Officer Jerry LeBoeuf.

Volunteer delegates formed from five local veterans organizations were assigned the responsibility of representing their respective Westport Veterans Organizations, and were present in constituting a quorum and an accounting for.

The following is a list of those delegate members and the individual organizations represented on behalf of:

  • Leno Rego Commander - American Legion James Morris Post #145
  • Ron Santos - American Legion James Morris Post #145
  • Kimberley Fernandes - American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit
  • Don Davidson – Disabled American Veterans HS Nickerson #118
  • Ron Duquette – Veterans of Foreign Wars W.A.&R. Ouellette Post #8502
  • Arthur CaesarVietnam Veterans of America Chapter #207

"Also I wish to recognize in attendance and thank him for coming to observe and support us in meeting with enthusiasm was the Honorable State Representative Paul A. Schmid, III," LeBoeuf said.

rsz_6.jpgThe delegate members established a name and are now in process to report to their organizations that we have a name and that it will be called: Westport United Veterans Council. "We began the process of organizing a mission statement or purposes and methods of the organization or charters and bylaws," LeBoeuf said.

They discussed the leadership required to create a committee to go forward: Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Legislative Aid, and Chaplain.

They talked about perhaps a legislative aid where they get tuned in to what’s going on nationally and the state, and reporting that to our member organizations. They discussed the importance of a website. They agreed it also a good idea about the Veteran Service Officer being a liaison to the town of Westport and as such providing a periodic report and announcement of Veterans Events to the Board of Selectmen in reporting the activities of the Westport United Veterans Council.

"These among other important items were successfully reviewed and we decided to meet next month to continue our establishment process. Thank you for your support," LeBoeuf said.
