Westport watches
while Will and Kate tie the knot. EverythingWestport.com Sunday,
May 01, 2011 Whites of Westport served up
pomp and pageantry with its clotted cream, banger sausages, and eggs, if you
please, as 113 Westport residents plucky enough to rise before dawn were treated to a
Cinderella fairy tale marriage replete with golden carriages, jewels, and
hundreds of thousands of the kingdom's royal subjects in attendance while
close to a billion people around the world watched on the "tellie." Grimm Brothers' take note. No glass slipper needed her. Gentry and commoners, dressed to the
nines, enjoyed a royal English country wedding breakfast of scones with clotted
cream, banger sausages, and eggs at
White's of Westport while their eyes were glued to the wide-screen TVs
watching His Royal Highness William of Wales, K.G. and Miss Catherine Middleton become the
Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The event was capped by the kiss
viewed 'round the world. And Westport's newest business,
Sisters of the Wool, threw an early morning knitting party while watching the
Royal Wedding. No hats were left behind. Haberdashers and milliners from
around the world were kept busy for this royal event. Kate Middleton, or now more
appropriately the Duchess of Cambridge, is an avid wearer of eclectic hats,
so as you might expect British hats
stared at royal wedding and at White's. The mostly female crowd at Whites wore
a dazzling area of headwear, some demurely covering the wearer's face and
others perched on high with peacock and pheasant feathers. And the few men in attendance were
dressed suitably in their morning wear including top hats. There were commemorative wedding
favors, and prizes were awarded for Royal Trivia and the best Kate inspired
head wear, which was won by Chris Monroe of Westport.. Christopher Elgar of Attleboro wins
7th Annual Devin Laubi 5K Walk/Run. Madalena Boudreau of Fall River is top female finisher at
21:18. EverythingWestport.com Sunday, May 01, 2011 View the photo album now 26 photos | Broadband/DSL speed | Christopher Elgar of Attleboro (17:28) edged out Eric Worsley of Fall River (17:31) in a near photo finish to
win 7th Annual Devin Laubi 5K Walk/Run. Matthew Corr took third at 17:41. Worsley was last year's winner with a time of
17:20. The Fall River athlete had three, consecutive second place finishes
before finally bringing home the gold in 2010. Elgar last won the Westport charity's annual 5K in 2009. Sparkling sunshine with cool, crisp air on race day Sunday brought out
a record-setting 150 runners and walkers, but record setting times stayed
home. This year's weather was a far contrast from last year's rain, but the
race times didn't reflect the conditions. "It was a little windy out
there," said winner Chris Elgar, a comment echoed by many of the
runners. "I really like the course, though. It's residential and very
comfortable to run in." Elgar, the
2009 winner, just seven seconds off his best time of 21:21, was a few paces
ahead of Worsley at the finish line. These two have
been trading turns dominating this classic 5K fundraiser for families with
children who have cancer. Top
competitor Joann Mathews, last year's female winner and fourth place overall,
was noticeably absent, running in another race in New Bedford (Louie’s 5K Run.) The women,
led by Madalena Boudreau, trailed the top male
finisher by a full four minutes. "Joanne's a great runner,"
Boudreau said. Boudreau finished fourth female in 2010. "It
was breezy, but nice," Boudreau said. The perky, pretty blond runner was
a full minute off last year's time. "I felt pretty good. With these
races you never know until you start running and see how you feel. My lower back
was sore, but it's always something." Boudreau finished second female in
2009 year at 23:39. Yvette
Taylor notched a second place female finish at 24:15, and Westport's Annette
Ainsworth took third with 24:31.

Robin Burns-Laubi with husband Andy were
interviewed by ABC6 before race time. Devin Laubi Foundation
benefits families of children stricken with cancer. The Devin Laubi
Foundation hosts this annual event for the benefit of families with children
stricken with cancer. "We had a great turnout this
year," said event organizer Robin Burns-Laubi “We continue to see improved participation
in this 5K. Last year the weather was miserable and we had 43 contestants
back out. We more than made up for that this year." “Our community’s continued support for
children with cancer warms our hearts,” said Ms. Burns-Laubi.
“These kids need their parents more than ever during these times. The
runners' support helps ensure a frightened child can have what they need, or
at least what we can help with." "As most of you know, Devin
needed and wanted both of his
parents while he endured the horrors of cancer. Unfortunately our financial situation did
not warrant that without losing our home, Devin’s home, or being able to put
food on the table and maintain our health insurance (very much needed at that
time). We feel we are granting the
unspoken wish come true; it’s not Disney, but it’s the heart’s need, for
parent and child,” Ms. Burns-Laubi said. There were cash prizes for top 3
finishers in the men’s and women’s divisions. The top man and woman also won duffle
bags. “I want to thank all of our donors and sponsors,” Ms. Burns-Laubi said. “Without them we couldn’t conduct this fund
raiser.” There were refreshments, fruit, power
bars, bottled water and raffles including a 50/50. The first 150 entrants
received either a t-shirt or socks. Race proceeds go to the Devin Laubi Foundation, which benefits the families of children
stricken with cancer. For more information call (508) 636-7369, or visit the
Foundation’s web site at: www.mydevin.org For more information about this event
