Inspired by the discovery of a coat
hanging from a ceiling rafter in house on Cornell Road prior to restoration,
David Allen began recording scenes at a variety of historic sites in
Westport. On display will be his photographs of Westport Town Farm, the Oscar
Palmer Farm, a house on Cornell Road and Main Road. Photographer David Allen is drawn to
the mystery of old and abandoned structures: “From the buildings themselves
to what artifacts may be left behind, there is a sense of lives lived.
Narratives are suggested and the ephemeral nature of life and death is felt.
These incremental photographic slices seek to explore the fluid, always
changing energy of existence.” David Allen, a Westport resident for
over 30 years, was the coordinator of the Academy of Visual and Performing
Arts and the instructor of photography at Westport High School. He is a
Visiting Lecturer of Photography for UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and
Performing Arts. He is a well-known area photographer whose work is part of
numerous private collections. This exhibition will be the first opportunity
for the community to view artifacts discovered during the recent
archeological dig at the Waite Potter site. In 2009, archaeologists from the
Fiske Center of Archaeological Research conducted excavations at the
Waite-Kirby-Potter site, the location of Westport’s oldest documented
building. The excavations revealed what life may have been like during the
late 18thand 19thcenturies on this farm, and how the Waites, Kirbys and Potters
contributed to the town’s history through the things they left behind – both
material and documentary. This research, supported by the Westport Community
Preservation Act, is part of a growing body of research for this area of New
England which is poorly understood archaeologically, but yet has a rich and
diverse history. Jenny O’Neill, Director of the
Westport Historical Society commented “The parallels between David Allen’s
photographs and the archeological artifacts are striking. This is an unusual
opportunity for visitors to experience history from a more artistic perspective
through the eye of a photographer, and perhaps be inspired themselves and
gain greater awareness that remnants of history are everywhere!”

Saturday morning, bringing sunshine, high spirits and a good turnout as the 8th Annual Westport River Run
launched five waves of competitive kayakers, canoers
and paddle boarders from the Hix Bridge landing
northward to The Head of Westport. Some came to race for the glory and others
just for the family fun of taking another crack at the 6.5 mile Challenge
Course. The wind was light and the current
mild.

took top honors and first finishers of the 8th running of the Annual Westport
River Run.
"It was a good race, the weather
was beautiful," Halpin said. "I
definitely like it (the race) better than two years ago. I'm getting
older!" The course distance was shortened two years ago. The 70+ year olds in their Kevlar
canoe put the move on 2nd place overall finisher Joe Lukaszevicz,
53, in his carbon fiber canoe during the last leg of the race, proving that
age is no barrier to being competitive athletes. Phil Casey was the first challenge
paddleboard finisher (prone) while sprint paddleboard (stand up - SUP) Tom
Pierce was first standup paddleboard finisher, pulling up just behind Phil
Casey. There were four heats of competition:
Challenge Paddleboard race, Challenge Boat race, Paddleboard Sprint, and Boat
Sprint starts. The Family Fun race went off 15 minutes later at 10:00 a.m.. Yvonne Zuther
of Westport and her 5 month old dog, Maury, proved that man's best friend
makes a good paddle boat companion as the two finished in good spirits and a
respectable time. "I love it. I do it every
year," Zuther said. "It's for a great
cause. This is Maury's second trip in a canoe. He
seems to like it too." Heather Cronin of Dartmouth and
daughter Chloe paddled side-by-side with Mom urging on the youngster. Heather
took time out from her horseback riding to have a little one-on-one with
Chloe. Heading north upriver and under Hix Bridge these competitive kayakers show good form and
determination.
