Political pundits are sharpening
their knifes. EverythingWestport.com Sunday, January 16, 2011 Updated Friday, January 21, 2011 photos/EverythingWestport.com Political pundits are sharpening their
knifes as prospective pols are taking out
nomination papers for what promises to be an exciting April annual election.
The deadline for obtaining
nomination papers is Thursday,
February 17, 2011 at 4 p.m. Of special note will be the two, three-year selectmen's
seats up for grabs with incumbents Steven Ouellette and Brian Valcourt facing potentially stiff competition from Diamond
Rock Farm's Tony Vieira, Jr. (pictured left), all who have taken out their
papers, but which must be certified by the Board of Registrars by February 22
by 5 p.m., and then presented to Town
Clerk no later than March 8, 2011 by the end of day for the candidates to be
on the ballot. Another race to watch is Highway Surveyor
Jack Sisson who may be challenged by former Board of Health Agent Ralph Urban and town resident Arthur Anderson, all who have
also taken out their nomination papers for this three-year elected position. Marlene Samson has also taken out her
papers for another three-year term, but don't expect a candidate to run any
time soon against Westport's very popular Town Clerk. Elaine Ostroff,
Jim Coyne and Jack Pacheco have all taken out nomination papers for the
one-year unexpired term made vacant with the election of Selectman Paul
Schmid to State Representative. Additionally, nomination papers are
available for the following three-year
elected offices: ·
One Treasurer ·
One Collector of taxes ·
One Assessor ·
One Board of Health ·
One School Committee ·
One Regional School
Committee ·
One Fish Commissioner ·
Two Constables ·
Two Trustees of Free
Public Library ·
One Landing
Commissioner ·
One Commissioner of
trust Funds Nomination papers are also available for
the following five-year elected
offices: ·
One Housing Authority ·
One Planning Board In addition, one School Committee seat for two-year
unexpired term created by the resignation earlier of Russell Kleber. The deadline for filing nomination papers
for certification by the Board of
Registrars is Tuesday, February
22, 2011 by 5 p.m. Left: Richard Spirlet, joined by his wife, children and grandchildren,
was sworn in by Town Clerk Marlene Samson as Westport’s newest selectman in
last year's April elections. Spirlet rode the wave of a national referendum on fiscal
conservatism to an overpowering victory in the selectman’s race, replacing
Gary Mauk who decided not to run. Selectmen issue a call
to those who wish to serve their community. The Board of Selectmen
also announced that 25 seats on town committees are available for those who want
