DCR
plan to remove 32 ocean front campsites raises ire of seasonal campers. EverythingWestport.com Saturday, December 10, 2011 Horseneck Beach
State Reservation located in Westport, is a heavily used
recreation facility with one of the most popular beaches and campgrounds in
the DCR (Department of Conservation and Recreation) system. So
why does the state's protector of all things recreational want to remove 32
prime, oceanside camping sites that are the jewel in the crown of DCR's most
popular campground. Why
indeed asks Westport's State Senator Michael Rodrigues. "I
think there might be a surprise there," Rodrigues told Westport's
Business to Business networking group when discussing DCR's new Resource Management
Plan for Horseneck Beach Reservation . "There
is one issue in the plan I'm very much opposed to. They (DCR) want to upgrade
the campground, and Coastal Zone Management, an environmental group, is
saying they have to eliminate the road that cuts along the beach, right
through the heart of the 32 camp sites, because it is in a dune system." The
camp sites were built in the 1950s. DCR
held a public meeting on Monday, December 5th to review their proposed long-term
Resource Management Plan for Horseneck Beach State Reservation and Dearest Lloyd
Memorial State Park. Senator
Rodrigues again expressed his concern over the removal of prime camp sites,
as did several long time campers who have organized and presented petitions protesting
DCR's planned actions. The full draft plan is available to the public on the DCR website at: http://www.mass.gov/dcr/news/publicmeetings/rmppast.htm. "This
is not the time to take away beach front camp sites," said WB2B member
Elaine Ostroff. "People are under a lot of economic stress right now and
shouldn't be deprived of their summer pleasures. I hope that these ocean
front sites could be grandfathered into whatever new rules are being made." Click here to hear what the
Senator told the Westport's Business to Business group at one of their recent
breakfast meetings. Click

campsites. Their comment period ends January 4, 2012. Click here to read about Trailer Turbulence in the Horseneck

Horseneck Beach campers should plan to attend tonight's DCR meeting. The
Massachusetts Department of
Conservation and Recreation held a Public Meeting on Monday, December
5th to discuss the Draft Horseneck Planning Unit, Resource
Management Plan (including Horseneck Beach State Reservation and Demarest
Lloyd Memorial State Park) at Fall River Heritage State Park, Davol Street, Fall River. Part of the plan is the relocation of 32 oceanfront trailer lots in
the Horseneck Beach Camp Ground, a move opposed by Westport's State Senator
Michael Rodrigues (over my dead body!). DCR presented an overview of the plan’s contents and recommendations. DCR invites written comments on the draft plan for a period of 30 days
after the public meeting. Comments may be submitted via e-mail to DCR.Updates@state.ma.us or by U.S. Mail to: Horseneck RMP
Comments, P.O. Box 66, 194 Cranberry Road, South Carver, MA 02366. If you have questions about the public meeting or how to make a
