  New Exhibition

New exhibition to be presented by Westport Historical Society: Paintings and Poetry of Mercy Etta Baker (1876 - 1957)

For the month of March, the Westport Historical Society is pleased to present an exhibition featuring the delicate watercolor paintings and reflective poetry of a little known Westport artist Mercy Etta Baker.

Born in 1876, Mercy Baker grew up at Westport Point, exploring the vast holdings of her father Jehiel Baker at Horseneck. The seasonal and natural beauty of Westport’s landscape provided the inspiration for her painting and poetry. With the recent purchase of four additional watercolors by Mercy Etta Baker (funded in part by the Westport Cultural Council), the Historical Society felt it was time to focus attention on both the paintings and poetry of this somewhat obscure artist. Her personal attachment to Westport, particularly to Horseneck, is powerfully articulated through her art which features dune and river landscapes and evocative portraits of her acquaintances. Today, her work provides a glimpse into the early 20th century Westport and environs.

Also on display will be reproductions of her work held by the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

Exhibition located at the Bell School, 25 Drift Road, Head of Westport

Open Mondays and Wednesdays 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturdays 1 - 4 p.m.,

Historic Celebration at Adamsville Mill Pond!

300 to 400 hundred people, by most accounts, joined the Westport Historical Society Saturday August 25th at 10.30am at Adamsville Pond for a special celebration of the restoration of the pond and recognition of the efforts of Ralph Guild in preserving this corner of Westport’s and Little Compton’s heritage. The event included a formal presentation of awards honoring Ralph Guild by Westport Historical Society and Westport River Watershed Alliance. It also provided an opportunity for the local community in both Westport and Little Compton to thank Ralph Guild in person, and to watch as the water was released into the Pond. Sample Johnny Cakes were prepared from Gray’s meal, cider by Brian Medeiros of Dartmouth Orchards was served, soft drinks provided by Lees Market, and all enjoyed music by Charlie Cann and the Bear Swamp Admirals.

The Westport Historical Society presented a look into the history of North Watuppa Reservoir and its impact on the surrounding region. The southern tip of North Watuppa pond extends into Westport. It has been the source of water power, the cause of border disputes and boundary changes, the subject of court cases and controversy, closely intertwined with the development of Fall River and Westport mills. Tom Moran has close personal connections to the topic. His grandfather, John W. Moran, acted as superintendent and chief engineer of the Watuppa waterworks between 1910 - 1945.
